1 CEIT 225 Instructional Design
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kürşat Çağıltay

2 Turnin your Analysis Report
Hard copy (Paper) to your facilitator Submit electronic copy to Turnitin

3 Instructional Design (ID)?
The systematic process of translating principles of learning and instruction into plans for instructional materials and activities.

4 DONE A = Analysis In analysis stage of ID process, want to find out
What is the goal or intended outcome Goal analysis What is the content What is the context Who are the learners or audience Audience analysis DONE

5 Your Task now Designing a short Instructional module
To teach Internet Safety Materials A text material – about 4 pages, color print (with Photoshop) A digital material (Adobe Flash) A video – 3-5 minutes, stopmotion

6 (Dick & Carey’s Model) Revise Instruction Conduct Instructional
Analysis Assess Need to Identify Goal(s) Write Performance Objectives Develop Assessment Instruments Develop Instructional Strategy Develop And Select Instructional Materials Design and Conduct Formative Evaluation Analyze Learners and Contexts Design and Conduct Summative Evaluation (Dick & Carey’s Model)

7 a Big Transition Move from Macro-instructional design…
“What to teach” decisions Decision-making at the curriculum level Selection, sequencing, summarizing, and synthesizing …to micro-instructional design “How to teach” decisions Decision-making at the lesson level The learning moment: “Where the rubber meets the road!”

8 Components Instructional Strategies Selection of Delivery System
Selection of Media

9 Instructional Components
Pre-instructional activities Motivating/gaining attention Informing learner of objectives/purposes Telling them what they already need to know Content Presentation Presenting the content Guiding the learning Learner Participation Giving the learner opportunities to practice Giving feedback Assessment Follow-through activities

10 Strategies Example from football?

11 Instructional Strategies
Instructional strategies are used generally to cover the various aspects of sequencing and organizing the content, specifying learning activities, and deciding how to deliver the content and activities.

12 Learning Components of Instructional Strategies
Gagne’s nine events Gaining attention Informing learner of the objective Stimulating recall of prerequisite learning Presenting the stimulus material Providing learning guidance Eliciting the performance Providing feedback about performance correctness Assessing the performance Enhancing retention and transfer

13

14 Selection of Delivery System
what instructional medium will be used and how learner will be grouped.

15 Content Sequence The first step in developing an instructional strategy is identifying a teaching sequence and manageable groupings of content. What sequence should you follow in presenting content to the learner? It depends on your instructional analysis

16 Clustering Instruction
The consideration of how to determine the amount of information to be presented. The age level of your learners The complexity of material The type of learning taking place Whether the activity can be varied, thereby focusing attention on the task The amount of time required to include all the events

17 Lesson-Level Organizational Strategies
Organization of a lesson may follow this pattern: Introduction Body Conclusion Assessment

18 Developing an Instructional Strategy
Check with both SMEs and learners!

19 Timeline Analysis report due date-March 21st Design report – April 8th
