1 Welcome to Parent Orientation August 23, 2017
Mrs. Anthes – Math Mrs. Williams – ELA/S.S. Mrs. Lara – Science Mrs. McIntyre – ELA/S.S. Mrs. Nichols – Math/Science Fifth grade consists of two PODS.

2 Schedule Conference/Specials 8:30-9:20 Lunch 12:25-12:55
Recess :55-1:25 All-Star Friday starts September 8 at 7:30am.

3 Things to purchase in cafeteria:
Agendas for $3 (REQUIRED) Social Studies Weekly for $8 (REQUIRED) Pre-order Field Day t-shirts for $8 Fiesta Medal for $7 PTA dues for $8 Specht Spirit T-shirts for purchase Free and Reduced Lunch Applications can be filled out electronically as well as Volunteer Background Checks. Report incorrect Express Cards to me. Please make sure you have your Express Cards given to one student in your family.

4 Volunteering Must fill out a volunteer background check on If you filled one out last year, you must do it again. Can be filled out online.

5 Agendas Check daily for:
assignments missing work behavior marks comments from teachers Sign daily and include your comments if needed. Any assignments not completed that day in class will be due the following day. Agenda must be signed nightly. We have told the students that it is their responsibility to remind their parents to sign.

6 Grading-9 weeks Class work/daily work counts as 50%.
Independent assessments/Quizzes/Common Assessments/Projects count as 45%. Per new district guidelines, any student can earn the opportunity to retest ONE assessment/quiz and ONE daily grade per subject per nine weeks. Students will receive no higher than a 75 on a retake. The student will have 5 school days from the date the grade was posted in Gradebook to rework the assignment. District Common Assessments are not subject to retest. Homework counts as 5% and cannot be redone. Late work: 1 day late will receive up to 80% of the grade received by student, 2 days up to 60% of the grade received by student, after 2 days no credit will be given.

7 Journals in all subjects can be taken home nightly to study or use with help on homework but must be brought back the next day!

Click on Parent Connection Follow the directions to set up an account If you need your Portal ID # ask Rose in the front office.

9 Encourage your child to check his/her own grade in TX Connect!

10 Behavior Policy for 5th Grade
1st offense: Warning 2nd offense: Written in agenda and logical consequence 3rd offense: Office referral/write up If the offense is already listed in the Handbook as an automatic office referral, we will follow that policy.

11 Allergies Please see the nurse if your child has a food allergy or a medical condition. Nurse –

12 Cell Phones Cell phones are to be kept in the student’s backpack until they are off campus. Cell phones must be TURNED OFF, not just on vibrate. Students will be given one warning about their phone. After the warning the phone will be picked up by the teacher and the parent will have to come and get it back.

13 DISMISSAL CHANGES If your child’s mode of transportation changes suddenly in the day and your child does not know about it, please let the front office know before 2:00pm. They will give us a note letting us know of the change. DO NOT ME ABOUT THE CHANGE OR CALL/TEXT YOUR CHILD. NEITHER ONE OF US WILL GET THE MESSAGE AS WE ARE IN CLASS UNTIL THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY.

14 Absences/Tardies School begins at 7:40 and ends at 3:00.
Tardies are recorded after 7:40. Absences are counted as unexcused without a parent or doctor note. The note MUST be received within 3 days of the absence or the absence will be counted as unexcused. Please write your student’s name and teacher’s name on the excuse note. Students have as many days as they were absent to make up tests and assignments. The first bell rings at 7:35am. 3rd-5th grade will do the pledge in the gym at that time.

15 FAQ Q: What STAAR Tests will my child be taking? A: Math, Reading, and Science They will be given 3 attempts to pass the Math and Reading tests.
