28 Asbestos Where can it be found?
Features Independent Building Site Logistics Asbestos Summary Questions Where can it be found? found in many different locations around U.S. many kinds of buildings especially in older facilities asbestos-containing materials can be found in items such as: general advantages & disadvantages organizations BRB summary guide duct insulation chalkboards cement pipes fireproofing materials vinyl flooring adhesives roofing felt high temp. gaskets plasters thermal & duct joint tape …and much more! Matthew Hiestand Construction Management Senior Thesis Presentation April 13, 2005

29 Asbestos Advantages & Disadvantages ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Features Independent Building Site Logistics Asbestos Summary Questions Advantages & Disadvantages ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES one of best insulators known to man health hazards if inhaled… (damaged asbestos releases fibers invisible to naked eye) fairly cheap to manufacture & install asbestosis, mesothelioma, & gastrointestinal cancers many uses for ACMs as shown in the previous table banned in 1970s, and now is being removed from many facilities prior to demolition general advantages & disadvantages organizations BRB summary guide Matthew Hiestand Construction Management Senior Thesis Presentation April 13, 2005

32 Asbestos Summary Guide
Features Independent Building Site Logistics Asbestos Summary Questions Asbestos Summary Guide Asbestos Summary Guide Definition "any of several minerals (as chrysotile) that readily separate into long flexible fibers, that have been implicated as causes of certain cancers, and that have been used especially formerly as fireproof insulating materials." Properties resistant to chemicals and heat does not evaporate or dissolve in water often combined with other materials to form asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) Locations all around the United States, especially in older facilities History widely used in 1930s through 1970s before being banned in the 1970s due to health hazards ACMs found in materials listed in Table 3.1 Advantages great insulator Disadvantages hazardous fibers can be inhaled into lungs fairly cheap and easy to manufacture and install proven to cause diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and gastrointestinal cancers Safety Keep people informed on locations of ACMs Organizations Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Look out for your own safety, as well as the safety of others U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Contact supervisor if damaged asbestos is discovered Only certified professionals should be allowed in these areas Matthew Hiestand Construction Management Senior Thesis Presentation April 13, 2005

44 Building Features Owner Expectations
Independent Building Site Logistics Asbestos Summary Questions Owner Expectations The University of Maryland set a 2-year schedule for the project This thesis proposed several ways to possibly shorten this schedule instead of July 04-06, perhaps building could be ready for start of summer 2006 Quality is important because it is a research lab building, and the owner has given it a 2 year construction period to ensure this Even if schedule is not shortened, more time and effort can now be spent on improving building quality Matthew Hiestand Construction Management Senior Thesis Presentation April 13, 2005

45 Building Features Lessons Learned
Independent Building Site Logistics Asbestos Summary Questions Lessons Learned Usually every change requires a trade-off. For example: Independent Building Higher cost of construction vs. Schedule reduction No tie-ins needed vs. Different aesthetics Site Logistics Less congestion for workers vs. Less usable campus area for U. of MD What may originally appear a simple change, affects whole project Matthew Hiestand Construction Management Senior Thesis Presentation April 13, 2005
