1 Weather, Climate & the Atmosphere!
Lets Learn About

2 What is weather? Rain Wind Sun Snow Storm Rain + Sun = Rainbow!

3 WHAT IS CLIMATE? Climate is the type of weather that a country normally gets. For example, in Africa you wouldn’t expect it to rain that often or in Alaska you wouldn’t expect it to be very warm, would you? The study of climate is called climatology. Climate affects the way we live, the clothes we buy, the crops we grow and even the hobbies we enjoy by the type of climate we have. Here are some examples: Not all types of plants and food will grow here but they will in other countries. Sometimes we cannot dry our clothes outside because it’s raining or a training session or a match might be cancelled because the pitch is flooded.

4 What is the difference between weather and climate?
The difference is that weather describes if we will have sun, rain, wind etc over a week but the climate describes the weather over a longer amount of time.

5 What is The atmosphere? The atmosphere is like a blanket of air that surrounds the earth and is almost 500km thick. Carbon dioxide and oxygen bounce off it and come back to earth. We are causing too much carbon dioxide which causes global warming. We need to stop many things to minimise the amount of carbon dioxide going up into the atmosphere. Here is a picture of the earth and the atmosphere.

6 A cloudy experiment! You will need: hot (not boiling) water, ice cubes, a jar, a metal sieve and a type of gas. ( hairspray, air freshener etc.) How to do it: 1. Fill the jar with hot water. Leave it for a moment then empty most of it out. Be sure to leave some water in the jar. The air inside the jar is now warm. 2. Put some ice cubes into the sieve and place it over the jar. Spray a type of gas into the jar and cover back up with the sieve. Observe what happens. Result: a cloud should form!!!!
