What is the Difference Between Weather and Climate?

Where does weather take place?  ALL weather occurs in the air that surrounds Earth – the ATMOSPHERE. (~620 miles from Earth to outer space)  The lowest layer (closest to Earth) is the TROPOSPHERE. Most water and clouds are found here. (~5 – 9 miles thick)

Elements of Weather What is it? Measured with a… ? temperature humidity air pressure precipitation How hot or cold the air is The amount of water vapor the air can hold The weight of air Warm air = Low air pressure Cold air = High air pressure Rain or snow thermometer hygrometer barometer rain gauge

How do we measure weather?

What is the key factor in determining the difference between weather and climate?

 Climate is weather information that describes what the weather USUALLY is like for a longer period of time.  http://video.nationalgeographic.com/vid eo/science/earth-sci/climate-weather-sci/ http://video.nationalgeographic.com/vid eo/science/earth-sci/climate-weather-sci/ Climate

Climate change is described in terms of years, decades, or even centuries. Scientists study climate to look for trends or cycles of variability * changes in wind patterns *ocean surface temperatures *precipitation over the equatorial Pacific resulting in El Niño and La Niña …or to place cycles or other phenomena into the bigger picture of possible longer term or more permanent climate changes *global warming

 Worldwide averages are often used to describe global climate.  Global climate can change, but it is not easy or quickly done.  Regional averages may vary a bit without causing a change in global climate. Global Climate

 For example: If the climate of Africa becomes warmer and the climate of Mexico becomes cooler, the global average may not change. The cooling of one area may offset the warming of another.  However, if Africa keeps warming more and it’s not balanced by other areas that cool, then global climate warms. It appears that the warming trend has been the case over the past century. Examples of Change
