Applying for AAFCS Awards, Grants, Fellowships, and Scholarships 2017

3 Objectives Promote the AAFCS Awards, Grants, Fellowships and Scholarships Program to AAFCS Members. Encourage opportunities for self-application and or nomination for member recognition. Provide insights for successful completion of forms for applications and nominations. Encourage volunteer service as a juror.

4 Awards Schedule Most awards are posted year round on the AAFCS website. Authorized awards are posted with due dates after annual conference. The awards to be given each year are authorized by the Board of Directors. Some awards are awarded each year Other awards are offered in alternating years

5 Getting Started * Go to AAFCS.org.
* Look for “Awards” at the top right. * Check the aafcs.org website for postings for after this year’s annual conference. Remember: not all awards are given every year!

6 Definitions AWARD: an honor in recognition for meritorious performance and contributions to the field of FCS. GRANT: financial support for research studies in FCS. FELLOWSHIP: financial support from an endowment given for graduate study in FCS. SCHOLARSHIP: financial support from an endowment given for undergraduate study in FCS.

7 Criteria Each award category has criteria for Purpose Funding policies
Candidate’s eligibility Select the award you want to apply for or nominate someone for then read carefully the above criteria for the award.

8 General Guidelines The general guidelines include:
Five governing statements. Overview of the cycle year for awards and recognition. Specific procedures for compliance.

9 Governing Statements *All policies, procedures, and guidelines must be followed in order for the nomination application to be considered for juried review for the recognition. Applicants /nominees are allowed to submit to only one award/grant/fellowship or scholarship per year. The ARC reserves the right not to choose a recipient if there is not a worthy applicant. A graduate fellowship/scholarship winner can not re-apply for the same award the following year. Members of the AAFCS BOD, ARC, & Leadership Council are not eligible to apply for awards during their term.

10 Governing Statements (cont)
Following the governing statement, specific award category guidelines will tell the applicant how to complete and submit a selected award application. Under the Awards tab (AAFCS.org) information will be listed as to directions for access, downloading, and transmission of data for submitting applications.

11 Follow Through Submitting your application:
Materials must be in PDF format or JPG for pictures. Materials must be written in English. Complete the data survey. Submit to or Due dates: DSA, August 15. All other awards, scholarships, and fellowships are due by the second Monday in January. Compliance measures are standardized.

12 Hints for Success *READ criteria and guidelines for selected awards
Required word limitations, page and reference quotas, etc. OUTLINE information & answer the questions according to the order they are asked on the form. START EARLY Keep a file of your FCS activities, so if and when you apply, you will have data to support your involvement at all levels of membership.

13 Hints (cont) Write with a strong voice or point of view.
Check for spelling, grammar, and mechanics of writing. PROOFREAD – get someone else to proofread for you. Apply the suggested edits before submitting final copy. Prepare requested information. Save an electronic copy. Check with AAFCS to make sure your application was received. Seek editorial critique – PROOFREAD AGAIN! SUBMIT APPLICATION!

14 Review Give title and abstract that identify the content.
Answer the questions (check for word and page limitations) Going over will eliminate your application. Be sure to include everything requested for the award/scholarship/fellowship. * membership data, resume, data survey, picture, etc Provide complete and comprehensible details. Present honest membership and credentials. Supportive materials need to be within the specifications.

15 Reviewing the Applications
Qualified jurors will be selected to review each of the awards given. DSA awards are due each year on August 15. All other awards/scholarships are due the second Monday in January. Review of the applications begin immediately after the deadline. Applicants will be notified in April,

16 Jurors Members of the ARC serve as jurors and juror chairs as assigned for each award. Each award is to be reviewed by 5 jurors allocated among ARC members and AAFCS volunteers selected to be jurors. Juror pool is selected to represent a diversity of volunteers. Volunteers wanting to be a juror can fill out the juror form found on the aafcs.org website.

17 Jurors (cont) Please submit the application or form to be a juror as soon as possible (preferably right after conference). Selected jurors are vetted for membership for: Status. conflicts of interest. and preference for assignment. Jurors are assigned to an award category according to their interests, professional experiences, and factors that pertain to knowledge and eligibility to serve.

18 Role of Jurors Familiarize self with details of the assigned award.
Review applications and assign points according to rubric for the award. Work independently through online process and submit scores. Participate in conference calls regarding applicants, scoring, and questions.

19 Award Recipients Award candidates should be notified in time to get “early bird” registration discounts. Regardless of the notification dates, awardees will be granted the lower rate. Awardees will be advised about conference sessions and events which they will be acknowledged or if they have some responsibility at the conference.

20 Role of the ARC The ARC… Works to streamline the application process.
Incorporates electronic technology in the application process. Strives to increase the number of applications each year. Recruits volunteers to be qualified jurors. Promotes the opportunity for all FCS professionals to receive recognition for outstanding contributions to FCS through AAFCS awards and recognitions.
