1-3 sentences long Summarize background, academic interests, future goals = why you should be admitted

3 Second Paragraph Background for Admission
Focus on academic success and progression How have you matured as a student How have you overcome learning barriers to be successful (optional) Relevant experiences, such as projects, internships, volunteer work

4 Third Paragraph Describe your professional goals - PURPOSEFUL
What career range (should be narrowed) are you pursuing and make a case for how this degree program will help get you there. Describe what you know about the profession you are pursuing – don’t be general! Example “school psychologist working in public education.” “business consultant specializing in the labor market”

5 Fourth Paragraph Why this academic program?
Mention specific courses Identify the standout faculty and their research areas and accomplishments Know program reputation Program strengths and weaknesses Link it all to your interests

6 Fifth Paragraph Brief summary of background and goals
1-2 sentences Reaffirm your preparation and confidence that your choice of programs is right.
