1 Starter for 5! Give two reasons why Ibrahim is important in Islam.
What does predestination mean? How many articles of faith are there in Sunni Islam? Give one example. Give a quote in Christianity that says people should forgive others. Give three types of punishment for criminals.

2 Starter for 5! Give two reasons why Ibrahim is important in Islam. God promised he would be the father of all nations, the prophet Muhammad was descended from Ibrahim through his son Ishmael, he is a good role model because of his obedience to God and his refusal to worship idols, with his son Ishmael he rebuilt the Ka’aba after it had been destroyed in the flood. What does predestination mean? God knows or determines everything that will happen in the universe. How many articles of faith are there in Sunni Islam? Give one example. 6 articles – there is only one God (Tawhid), angels communicate the message of God to humans, the Qur’an is the most important holy writing, Muhammad is the most important prophet, there will be a Day of Judgement. Give a quote in Christianity that says people should forgive others. ‘Let he who has never sinned throw the first stone.’ or ‘I tell you not seven times, but seventy times seven times.’ Give three types of punishment for criminals. Capital punishment, imprisonment, community service, suspended sentence/probation, fine, corporal punishment.

Guess Who??? These are the favourite books of people in the RE department and where they are kept in their house. Can you guess which book belongs to who? This starter is designed to link into the idea of special books and how the Qur’an is the most important/special holy book in Islam.

6 Quote Make sure students have this quote written in their books. ‘This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, containing guidance for those who are mindful of God.’

7 The Qur’an Book Club Each table is going to be given an aspect of the Qur’an to read and learn about. You will then meet up with other people from different tables to feedback what you have learned to each other at your Qur’an book club. You will then have a group discussion on what you think about the status, authority and teachings of the Qur’an. Watch the clip of Jimmy Kimmel’s book club to introduce the activity. Then set up the book club activity – this is similar to rainbow groups. Each group will research one area of the Qur’an and will need to feed this back to their new group. You will need one person from each group to form a new book club. They don’t need to write everything down when they listen to each other (maybe one interesting fact per person).

How far do you agree that the Qur’an is the Word of God? 1 = Agree 5 = Disagree What has surprised/ interested you the most about what you have found out? Would you recommend other people to find out about the Qur’an following your reading? Why might it be problematic / difficult to follow absolutely everything in the Qur’an?
