1 Interactions of Skeletal Muscles in the Body
Stephanie Gonzalez Period 3

2 Overview Prime mover (agonist)-The muscle that has the major responsibility for causing a particular movement Antagonists-Muscles that oppose or reverse a movement

3 AGONIST (Prime Mover) ANTAGONIST Biceps Triceps Deltoids Latissimus Dorsi Pectoralis Major Trapezius/Rhomboids Iliopsoas Gluteus Maximus Quadriceps Hamstrings

4 Biceps and triceps Arm muscles
In this picture we can see how the when the biceps are the prime mover then the triceps are the antagonist and when the triceps are the prime movers then the triceps are the antagonist.

5 Latissimus Doris and Deltoids
Back and shoulder muscle When the deltoid acts as the prime mover then the latissimus dorsi acts as the antagonist. However when the latissimus dorsi acts as the prime mover then the deltoid acts as the antagonist.

6 Pectoralis major and Trapezius
Chest and lower neck muscle When the pectoralis major is the prime mover then the trapezius is the antagonist. However when the trapezius acts as the prime mover then the pectoralis major acts as the antagonist.

7 Iliopsoas and gluteus maximus
Butt muscle When the iliopsoas acts as the prime mover then the gluteus maximus acts as the antagonist. However when the gluteus maximus acts as the prime mover then the iliopsoas acts as the antagonist

8 Quadriceps and hamstrings
When the quadriceps are acting as the prime movers then the hamstrings are the antagonist. However, when the hamstrings are acting as the prime movers then the quadriceps are acting as the antagonist.

9 Synergist: is the muscle or group of muscles that stabilizes a joint around which the movement is occurring. How does it stabilize? Adding extra force to a movement Reduce undesirable or unnecessary movement as prime mover contracts

10 Fixator: is the muscle or group of muscles that stabilizes the origin of the primary muscle movement and the joint from which it originates, says PT Direct. Video muscle
