I met with each of your children during their English class at the end of January. In my class visit every student received scheduling guidelines and a course request form. The Scheduling Guidelines and Course Descriptions can be found online at tigerwires.com.

Important highlights from Scheduling Guidelines All students must schedule seven full credit courses plus physical education, health, and lunch. For most students, this means scheduling the 4 core subjects – English, Social Studies, Math, and Science – plus 3 elective credits. **Those courses marked with an * are semester courses and only equal .5 credits, so it takes 2 of them to equal one full credit. Students MUST select 3 alternative elective courses. If a scheduling conflict should occur, alternate choices will be used to complete your schedule.

Important highlights from Scheduling Guidelines Honors Courses – these courses are college bound courses in which the level of difficulty and pace is increased. An accelerator of .05 is added for each honors course in the calculation of rank. College In High School (CHS) – this program gives students the opportunity to be exposed to college work while still in high school. Upon successful completion of CHS courses, the student will receive college credit and grade recorded on a regular college transcript. High school teachers and college professors have developed curriculum and tests for the following courses in our High School: Honors Physics, Honors Chemistry 2, Calculus, Honors Probability and Statistics, Honors Biology 2, Honors English 12, Honors Civics/Government, Programming in Basic, French 4, German 4, and Spanish 4 (there is a fee for these courses payable to the College).

Important highlights from Scheduling Guidelines Advanced Placement Courses –The Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide qualified, interested students the opportunity to complete college-level studies. Some students receive advanced placement and/or credit for the course when they enter college if they perform well on the AP exam at the end of the year. The AP courses are college-level. They require extensive, intensive preparation by the student. Because of the increased workload, an accelerator of .1 will be used to calculate class rank. Hollidaysburg Area Senior High offers AP courses in English, math, social studies, science, music, computer science, Latin, and psychology. Any student taking an Advanced Placement class must take the standardized AP test to receive the AP class rank accelerator and the transcript AP name. Students must currently be in an Honors or AP Level course with an average of 84% or higher and must take an AP screener to get into these classes. Keep in mind that Honors and AP classes have higher expectations for students and involve a lot of time and work. Keep this in mind when you are considering extra-curricular activities! All AP courses have summer assignments that must be completed in order to remain in the course.

Important highlights from Scheduling Guidelines If you are interested in taking Enrichment P.Ed/Health in the summer, make sure you discuss this with me. The policy for students who take Enrichment P.Ed./Health in the summer is that one does so to place another class into their schedule (this does not include a study hall). During the school year, students must keep a P.Ed. log where they log a minimum of one hour a week of an approved physical activity. A student may only do Enrichment P.Ed./Health 2 x’s in their High School career. Enrichment P.Ed./ Health is a pass/fail grade and is not included in class rank or GPA.

Important highlights from Scheduling Guidelines During the 10th grade year, students (who have not taken the Keystone Exams in 9th grade) will take the Keystone Exams in Biology, Algebra, and Literature. If you are not found to be proficient on these exams, you will be required to take a remedial course in the area(s) you are not proficient and then retake the exam. The remedial courses will be counted as semester electives. Students who took the Keystone Algebra exam and were not proficient in Keystone Algebra will not be permitted to take an Honors or an AP Math or Science. Students who were not proficient in Keystone Biology will not be permitted to take an Honors or AP Science.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS (SAP) Student Assistance Programs (SAP) were designed to help school personnel in identifying and assisting students who may be experiencing problems that are affecting their academic performance or behavior at school. The SAP team utilizes a systematic process to intervene and refer these students to appropriate in-school and/or community services. SAP consists of a core group of professionally trained staff of teachers, principals, school nurse, guidance counselors, and counselors from the Altoona Hospital Behavioral Services department.
