1 Woods Runner Literary Elements and Review

2 Setting The setting is Colonial America at war, and this takes place in the late 1700s. This is what it looked like in some places during the American Revolution.

4 Point of View The point of view is third person limited because I only know what Samuel is thinking.

5 Plot One day, Samuel is away from home when his village is attacked. His parents are taken prisoner, and he has to find them before it’s too late.

6 Conflict and Resolution
Samuel’s conflict is that he has to find his parents. This involves him going to New York on foot. He encounters Annie, a war orphan, while he is going to New York. Together, they resolve the conflict by finding Samuel’s parents.

7 Theme One theme is survival because Samuel has to survive the long walk. Another theme is family because Samuel cares for his family.

8 Flashback and Foreshadowing

9 Tone and Mood The tone and mood is mostly grim because of suspense and foreshadowing.

We jump into the woods every time we see somebody. They can’t be all bad. I…We… I had a ma, but then I didn’t

12 How Samuel Changed At first, Samuel was a boy who liked nature. Then, when the attack happened, he was boiling hot with rage at first, but then he became sort of grim and serious because he doesn’t talk a whole lot in the novel. At the end, when the group rescues Samuel’s parents, he is still grim and serious for a while, then he started liking nature again.

13 Review of Novel Overall Rating: This book marks 4.1 out of 5 because well, most of the book is good, but the grimness changes what the book feels like. The grimness still does something to the reader, like making vivid images in his mind.
