1 Section 4: Flowering Plants

2 Kinds of Angiosperms Monocots are flowering plants whose seeds have one seed leaf, or cotyledon. Most monocots have long, narrow leaves with parallel veins and produce flowers whose parts are in multiples of three.

3 Kinds of Angiosperms, continued
Dicots are flowering plants whose seeds have two seed leaves. Most dicots have leaves with branching veins and produce flowers whose parts are in multiples of four or five.

4 Visual Concept: Characteristics of Angiosperms

5 Reproduction in Angiosperms
A flower is a reproductive structure The male and female gametophytes develop within flowers, which promote pollination and fertilization more efficiently than do cones. The female part of a flower provides a pathway for sperm to reach the eggs without having to swim through water.

6 Parts of a Flower

7 Visual Concept: Fertilization of a Flower

8 Pollination self-fertilization
Plant fertilizes own ovules Plants that cannot fertilize their own ovules breed by cross-fertilization. The flowers of many angiosperms are adapted for pollination by wind or by animals. Flowers may have brightly colored petals, sugary nectar, strong odors, and shapes that attract pollinators.

9 Visual Concept: Flowers and Animal Pollinators

10 Fruits The ovary of a pistil is called a fruit after its ovules are fertilized. A fruit is a structure that develops from an ovary of a flower and contains seeds. primary function in seed dispersal When many fruits are eaten by animals, the seeds pass undigested through the animals and are dispersed.

11 Visual Concept: Development of a Fruit

12 Vegetative Reproduction
Many plants reproduce asexually in a variety of ways that involve nonreproductive parts, such as stems, roots, and leaves. The reproduction of plants from these parts is called vegetative reproduction. In most plants, vegetative reproduction is faster than sexual reproduction.
