Introduction to the Development Office
The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School Development Office has two main aims; to develop and enhance the School’s relationship with its wider communities, especially former pupils, parents, staff and local community and to raise funds in support of the School. If you would like to get in touch, we would be delighted to hear from you and, if you are able to visit the School in person, we would be very pleased to see you. We are very grateful indeed to many of you who have made generous donations in the past, large and small either to the Sixth Form Fundraising Campaign appeals or for specific areas of interest. Going forward we hope you will continue to be involved or become involved for the first time, your support really does make a difference as it insures the continued development of this fine school, which strongly promotes a comprehensive preparation for life after Coopers’, instilling as it does, the fundamental qualities of “love as brethren”. This is developed not solely in the classroom, but in tandem with enjoyment on the sports field, in the music, drama and arts and in so many other areas.

Message from the Headteacher
As the new Headteacher - and having being a deputy head here for eight years - I wholeheartedly support the work of the Development Office to raise money to support the work of the School. Our long and rich tradition is something which we are determined to maintain and strengthen but this is not easy in the era of restraint on Government funding for schools. We are doing our best to operate with fiscal discipline but the rich breadth of what we offer our students as part of what we believe to be an invaluable Coopers' Company and Coborn is challenging our budget! We would be most grateful for any assistance in helping the School to become even better. That assistance may be in the form of expertise or coming into School to talk to our students. Any financial assistance would obviously be greatly appreciated, in the light of my comments above. Very best wishes, Dr David Parry Headteacher

The Nicholas Gibson Free School was founded in 1536 by a prominent London citizen who earned his living as a grocer. On his death in 1549 Gibson’s wife, Avice, took over the running of the School which could take up to sixty boys, although only 30 were free scholars. In 1552 she asked the Coopers’ Company to undertake this task for her and thus the School included the Company’s title in its name. The School was situated in Ratcliffe, a small parish bordering the Thames and the original site of the School is still traceable, fittingly in School House Lane in Stepney. The School remained there until 1892 when it moved to premises in Tredegar Square in Mile End, where it remained until the move to Upminster. Prisca Coborn, the widow of a brewer, founded a School for both boys and girls in 1701, as a result of the terms of her Will published in the year of her death. The School was first housed in a site east of Bow Church, but it soon moved to a site between the Church and Bow Bridge. In 1814 the School moved to a site bounded by Old Ford Road and Fairfield Road, part of which was later to become the Bryant and May match factory (now a housing development), visible from the Eastern Region railway line into Liverpool Street. In 1870 the School moved to the site in Tredegar Square, later to be occupied by the Coopers’ Boys’ School. In 1891 the two Foundations were united. As the boys moved to Tredegar Square, Coborn, now an all-girls; school, moved to 86 Bow Road. In 1898 this school was relocated at Bow Road, where it remained until the move to Upminster. As a result of the amalgamation of the two schools, the new site was first occupied at Upminster in 1971, and by 1973 the whole school had moved onto the suburbs, where there are now over 1380 pupils. New buildings have regularly been erected – The McEwan Building for ICT in 1986, The Ratcliffe Building, housing the new Science Block, was opened in 1996; Science gained further accommodation with the Ansell Building added in The Prisca Coborn Building for Languages was opened in 2002, The Nicholas Gibson Building for Music and The Palmer Pavilion in 2004, and an Art 6th Form Studio Extension in Plans are afoot for further modernisation and development of facilities. We have invested significantly in developing our ICT facilities and now use technology extensively to support our management and teaching and learning systems. Our academic reputation is of great importance to us, so, too, is our reputation for being a school that cares for all the members of its community. We welcome students from all backgrounds and cultures. We ask only that they possess inquiring minds and the enthusiasm and determination to do their very best. In 2002 Coopers Coborn was pleased to be designated a Specialist Sports College. This does not mean that students have to be particularly gifted at Sports, but it does give us the facility to develop a range of sporting opportunities for our students. The extra-curricular achievements of the school in sport, music and drama are magnificent and comparable to any school in the country. In 2007 we were delighted to gain High Performing Specialist School status and took a second specialism, Humanities, which is currently being developed. In April 2009, the School was delighted to be awarded its third specialism, Training School.

Essentially, there are two main types of legacy:
Your greatest gift If you have enjoyed and continue to enjoy your relationship with the Coopers’ Company & Coborn School as a former student, parent, grandparent, teacher or friend, you may wish to consider leaving a legacy in your Will. Leaving a gift in your Will can make the most enormous difference to the lives of young people at CCCS making it possible for us to improve the teaching facilities within our school and to provide the very best environment in which students can learn. Your legacy will be a gift to future generations. You may wish to be specific as to the precise use to which CCCS must put your legacy, or you may wish to leave it as a general bequest. One advantage of making a bequest is that CCCS Fundraising Account is a registered charity so all gifts are free of inheritance tax. Essentially, there are two main types of legacy: A residuary legacy is a gift of all or part of what remains in your estate after all debts, taxes and all other bequests have been made. Here is a useful form of words: “I give the whole (or percentage share, or fraction) of the residue of my estate absolutely to CCCS Fundraising Account (Registered Charity Number ), CCCS, St Mary’s Lane, Upminster, Essex RM14 3HS, hereinafter called “the Charity”, such sum to be applied for the general purposes of the Charity. I declare that the receipt of the Headteacher or other proper officer of the said Charity shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors”. A pecuniary legacy is a specified sum of money. This will not be liable for inheritance tax, although the real value of your gift will be eroded over time unless it is linked to the Retail Price Index. Here is a useful form of words: “I give the sum of £….(in figures and words) to CCCS Fundraising Account (Registered Charity Number ), CCCS, St Marys Lane, Upminster, Essex RM14 3HS, hereinafter called “the Charity”, such sum to be applied for the general purposes of the Charity. I declare that the receipt of the Headteacher or other proper officer of the said Charity shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors”. We would highly recommend that you use the services of your solicitor or professional adviser for the appropriate wording, but the above could be used as guides.

Development – Making a Donation
You could help students at The Coopers’ Company & Coborn School through making a regular contribution by standing order either on a monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly instalment. This soon adds up to large sums, especially as we can reclaim tax on your donations through Gift Aid, if you are a UK taxpayer. Funding can be provided in many ways, through an annual gift, a specified one off donation to be invested and provide provision in perpetuity, sales of stocks and shares, legacies and many gifts also attract substantial tax saving benefits. Small and large gifts are welcome, whatever you feel is comfortable giving level for you, all donations are most gratefully received and extremely welcome. The opportunity to give is very flexible with either a single donation or a monthly contribution made over full or part of a year through a monthly standing order. If you are a UK tax payer all donations can be made tax efficiently and attract Gift Aid which increases the overall value of any gift by 25%, and if you are a higher rate tax payer, the cost is further reduced. You can be assured that your gift will go towards priority projects within the school where the money is most needed. To make a gift, please complete the Gift Card which includes a gift aid declaration for you to sign to enable us to claim back tax. We hope that you will consider helping us in some way, however small or large as your circumstances allow. If you are considering making a gift and need further information, please do not hesitate to contact Liz Evans, Development Manager at or on
