11 Close Reading Close Reading is a process for having students truly comprehend what they are reading by reading and rereading a text while looking for different things every time you read.

12 Opening: Steps to Close Reading
Identify the Genre It is important for students to know what type of text they are reading, fiction or nonfiction. This lets our students know exactly how they will need to read and what to look for.

13 Previewing a text Pictures Looking at pictures and any captions they might have will not only give students an idea of what they are about to read, but will begin to engage them. Text Features For nonfiction texts, students need to first look at: Table of Contents Heading/Sub-Heading Different types of print(BOLD, Underlined) Glossary Maps, Diagrams, Graphs Pictures and captions

14 One strategy for Close Reading
During this time, students are simply reading the text and looking for key ideas and trying to decide the structure of the text. Read 2 Students are now rereading the text but identifying most important details in a given selection, while also keeping an eye out for content specific vocabulary. Read 3 Students are now rereading the text a third time with the intent of being able to summarize the content, make connections and draw conclusions.
