1 Active Reading and Annotation

2 Active Reading Strategies  Make Connections  Text to Self  Text to Text  Text to World  This reminds me of…  I’ve heard of this…  I’ve seen/read this….

3 Questioning  Ask yourself questions to clarify what you are reading.  Do I understand what I’m reading?  What is the author trying to say?  What does this mean?  What is the message of this piece?

4 Visualizing  I can picture…  I can see the…  The thoughts in my head make me…  I can feel… In your mind, form pictures of what is happening in the text.

5 Vocabulary  As you read, note unfamiliar words.  Look for prefixes and suffixes.  Identify the root word.  Look for context clues.

6 Infer and Predict  Interpret, draw conclusions, and hypothesize.  I wonder why…  I wonder how the author feels about this subject?  This makes me feel…  This statement must mean…

7 Evaluate  I agree with the author.  I disagree with the author this text is believable.  This text is not believable.  The author was able to persuade, entertain, and/or inform me.  The style of writing the author uses…. Form an opinion or make judgments about the text while you read.

8 Determine Importance Get to the “heart” of the text. Note characteristics of the text. Skim text. Read bold print, title of graphs, charts, and tables. Read first and last lines of paragraph carefully.

9 Summarize  Give a brief synopsis of the text using important information.  Identify key points.  Identify the main idea/s.  So far I’ve learned….

10 Annotation is…  A key component of active reading which involves making notes and/or comments in the margins surrounding the text.

11 While annotating, students will…  Be actively engaged in reading  Learn to interact or have a conversation with the text as they read  Learn to monitor their own thinking  Learn to use 8 active reading strategies to deepen comprehension in literary, content, practical, and mathematical text.

18 Determine importance.  Is the text fiction or non fiction?  What information is important vs. unimportant?

19 Summarize what you read. What are the key points/main ideas?
