1 Reminder – this presentation will be on the mobile Orientation site to view during and after orientation. Also, this will essentially be the same presentation as tomorrow’s parent concurrent session which is intended for parents from students in other UC colleges and majors to learn about our university-wide services. ORTN GOALS: Comfort, Clarity, Connections and Care while Orienting Families and Creating Positive First Impressions. Explore. Discover. Decide. Declare. We empower students to choose best fit majors through highly personalized exploratory advising and innovative programming. personalized e

3 FERPA- Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
Under FERPA, Record Privacy rights transfer from the parents to the student once the student reaches 18 years of age or once he/she enrolls in an institution of higher learning. In either scenario, FERPA then regards the parents as “3rd parties.” Record release to all 3rd parties requires the student’s prior written and signed consent. In all cases, 3rd parties (including parents) attempting contact with administrative offices, college offices, or the faculty will be referred to the Registrar’s Office. You can learn more about the “Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of (FERPA) from the Registrar’s Office or you can enter the U.S. Department of Education website at Once students schedule classes FERPA kicks in and it is critical students are contacting advisors and professors with questions and not parents.

4 Center for Exploratory Studies
Exploratory is the largest “major” at UC! (But you cannot graduate as exploratory!) You are not alone as exploratory or undecided is the largest major at UC…every year!

5 Types of Exploratory Students
Openly exploring all majors Considering a few potential majors Interested in a Competitive UC major In a major, but considering a switch (75% of college students nationally change majors at least once) Source: NACADA Many – up to 75% - of declared students change their major at least once while in college. Students: Look back at your parents. Parent: Raise your hand if you ever changed your major or changed your career?

6 Advising Commitment & Model
Assigned professional advisor One-on-one, highly personalized advising Support for: Course planning Major selection process Decision-Making Model Mandatory advising for freshmen, sophomores under a 2.3 gpa and juniors (meet at least once per semester!) We use an “Intrusive” advising model and will work with students until they are declared in their major. Most exploratory freshmen declare their major during or after their first year.

7 Role of the Academic Advisor
An academic advisor's role is to provide advice and guidance appropriate to advance each individual student's educational goals and plans. An advisor is an educator, very much like a faculty member is in the classroom. Advisors endeavor to inform, support, and encourage each student in a manner that the advisor deems appropriate to educate that particular student. We help students learn to be college students.

8 Student Commitment Advising – you are responsible for scheduling your own advising appointments (30 min. or 1 hr.) Exploring Majors –let your advisor know when you’re ready to start! Courses of Interest – your advisor will help identify these Direct to Resources – ask questions and seek answers – advisors need to know what you want to know! Canopy and Blackboard (BB) – check daily! “CES Advising” organization on BB – check weekly! UC – check daily! Quick questions – your advisor UC web site – “search” function Talking Points: Schedule an in-person appointment to discuss majors or complex issues: - This could be a phone appointment if you’re not from the Greater Cincinnati area. Students should be at a computer for any phone appointment
