3 Purpose of outreach clinics
Research projects undertaken at these clinics are funded by external agencies (Gates foundation) Over 90% of women and children seeking care are not research participants Aim is to: Provide free consultation and medicines Eliminate malnutrition among expectant and new mothers and their babies Ensure children have access to primary healthcare and immunization Reduce child mortality Improve maternal and child health

4 Challenges of outreach clinics
out of 1,000 children in such communities die before the age of five. Few women have access to medical care during pregnancy. Research funding is not available to pay for simple medications like multivitamins. Lack of proper healthcare facilities, resulting in deliveries by untrained birthing attendants.

5 How we can help We can help to:
Employ healthcare professionals and nurses Provide free medicines and treatment to 10,000 pregnant women and 80,000 children under the age of five years AKUH has already set-up clinics in these areas and requires support in terms of operational costs.

6 Why is AKUAANA doing this project with AKU?
REASONS Giving back to AKU Supports educational activity of AKU medical students Provides primary care to women and children. Also special focus on anemia treatment in pregnant women impacting infant mortality and perinatal morbidity. AKU alumni Anita Zaidi 88 is heading the research program there. So we have feet on ground. The project is not outrageously expensive, it will cost about $17,000 per year to support the clinic.
