1 Setting SMART Objectives
How to write the what and the how in an objective 30 words or less!

2 Writing S.M.A.R.T Objectives
Writing S.M.A.R.T objectives is primarily about creating alignment between your skills knowledge attributes and behaviour and what the business is expects you to deliver. Both you and your manager have a joint responsibility in writing S.M.A.R.T objectives in terms of what you have to do and how you are going to do it…………here’s how >

3 How to set SMART objectives that include the WHAT and the HOW
A good SMART objective describes both the WHAT you want to achieve (the expected result/outcome) and HOW you are going to do it (the required behaviour/attitude). 4 Tips (1) Always start with To: (2) Use an action VERB (see the next page for a full list of verbs) (3) Insert the phrases of words ‘so that’ to help guide you to write the result/outcome or desired behaviour required and (4) Use 30 words or less : WHAT Example No 1 “To establish a documented action plan that drives new solid waste reduction targets, so that by year end you meet a 10% reduction, and create a more engaged team through strong influencing skills.” HOW Now have a go see page 4 >

5 How to set SMART objectives that include the WHAT & the HOW
Example No 2: You have some issues with ingredient, energy, yield monitoring and control. It needs a new approach. The team of engineers need to be more aligned both in monitoring but also they need to develop a range of agile and business improvement ideas. You want the manager to develop and enhance his coaching and feedback style with the team. Example No 3: You would like a team leader to take a review of the current state of a failing process, where she then needs to make a number of significant changes and also be courageous with some process improvements recommendations, so that the team dramatically improve its customer feedback scores and also achieve better utlisation of costs such as interim resources. You would like her leadership style to be more open and create an improved level of customer intimacy. Write an objective with what and how in 30 words or less to address the above Write an objective with what and how in 30 words or less to address the above

6 How to set SMART objectives that include the WHAT & the HOW
Example No 3: The DNVGL safety assessment Health & Safety is not taken as seriously on the team as you mush as you would like. Your managers needs to provide more of a risk free culture where people are not afraid to question or challenge. You need them to take safety seriously and role model safety leadership behaviours and develop an institutional / embedded mindset with all learning across the team. . Example No 4: You would like a team leader to take a review of the current state of a failing process, where she then needs to make a number of significant changes and also be courageous with some process improvements recommendations, so that the team dramatically improve its customer feedback scores and also achieve better utlisation of costs such as interim resources. 7 1 Waste Reduction To establish a documented action plan that drives new solid waste reduction targets, so that by year end you meet a 10% reduction, and create a more engaged team through strong partnerships and influencing skills. Meeting the target viewed as less than 10% improvement  (Not met) 10-15% (Met) 15-20% improvement (Exceeded). Improved engagement scores. Lower absenteeism, employee turnover, exit interview data. 2 Yields Metrics To formulate an ingredient, energy, yield monitoring and control approach so that engineers aligned to monitoring develop a range of agile and business improvement ideas developed through your enhanced coaching and feedback style. All engineers know any significant deviations 10%+ from targets and they do not detect/respond to the deviations = unacceptable performance. The team’s capability with yield metrics enhances. Your leadership style is less directive. 3 Project Sahara To review the current state, then make a number of significant/courageous process improvements recommendations, so that we dramatically improve customer feedback scores and achieve better utlisation of interim resources with your leadership style creating a more open and improved level of customer intimacy. Contract is renewed for 3 years +. Overall customer satisfaction is at 90+. Interim/ contingent costs down by 20%. Your build a reputation as a key strategic partner.

8 4 Health & Safety To embrace the DNVGL safety assessment and role model a Safety culture on the team, so that you actively find time to plan, act, review and check safety and the team recognise your leadership accountability in role modelling a zero tolerance with safety and developing a safe risk free team culture. The team positively call out the change in your behaviour. You can give me examples of what changes you have made or what actions you have taken to pre-empt issues. People have more courage to talk openly about issues. Measures don’t have to $ or % if I can also see your behaviour if I can see it I can measure it! 5 Yields Metrics
