1 Revision Skills

2 Objectives Understand the importance of revision
Find a revision style that suits you Learn how to plan and manage revision

3 Fail to Prepare… … Prepare to Fail!
Revision when done correctly shouldn’t be difficult. Revision can, however, be time consuming, so it’s important you start revising sooner rather than later.

4 What is Revision? Being Active – Not just Reading!!!! Planning
Revision means “Seeing again” Being Selective Discovering what information may have slipped your memory Practising answers

5 Procrastination This is one of the Biggest problems for students
Procrastinating means to put off or delay doing something... Remove distractions: - Turn your phone off - Log out of Facebook - Use watching TV or other distractions as a reward!

6 Revision Environment Good Bad
Do your tidying in advance, so you can’t use it as an excuse for not revising!

7 Plan out your time, make space to revise

12 Revision Techniques Revision/ Q&A Cards
Summary/Comparison Table or Grids Mind maps

13 Revision Techniques Posters Teaching Someone Mnemonics

14 Revision / Q and A cards Summarise key information into bullet points
Put Q on one side and A on another Use blank postcards/ post-it notes or special cards from stationers Read your cards through regularly Helpful Hint – Stick them around your bedroom (or house) so you see them regularly! Then you can then stick them all around your bedroom, toilet, bathroom, where ever you will see them and read them.  Read your cards through regularly, a good way of utilising revision cards as one of the student studying tips is to read the card, cover it try and summarise what it said. Then re-read it and cover it, count to 5 and try and summarise it in writing, this will force you to absorb it into your long term memory.  Highlight key information, then rewrite it in your own words. Take notes of the key points, then reduce the notes down until you can get the information on cue cards. Carry the cue cards around and look at them whenever you can.

15 Summary / Comparison Tables or Grids
Great way to compare or evaluate competing theories, grammatical rules or themes … Strengths Weaknesses Comments Theory 1 Theory 2 Theory 3 they’re a great way to compare or evaluate competing theories, grammatical rules or examples of themes in different parts of the course…but keep them fairly simple so you can remember them in the exam.

16 Helpful Hint: Use different colours!
Posters / Mind Maps If you can make things stand out on the page, they will stand out in your mind! Using colours and pictures may help you remember the theory, word, or information Helpful Hint: Use different colours!

23 Rhymes and alliteration, poems
Mnemonic Devices Mnemonics: are clues of any kind that help us remembering, usually by associating the information we want to remember with visual image, a sentence, or a word… Visual Image Acrostic Acronym Rhymes and alliteration, poems Mnemonics are clues of any kind that help us remembering, usually by associating the information we want to remember with visual image, a sentence, or a word. Visual image-associate a visual image with a word or a name Acrostic-make up a sentence in which the first letter of each word is part of represents the initial of what you want to remember Acronym-word that is made up by taking the first letters of all the key words or ideas you need to remember and creating a new word out of them Rhymes and alliteration- rhymes and alliterations(a repeated sound or syllable), and even jokes are a memorable way to remember more mundane facts and figures Chunking-breaks a long list of numbers or other types of information into smaller chunks Chunking

Short-Term Memory (STM) has a limited capacity Chunking is based on the idea that short-term memory is limited in the number of things that can be contained. A common rule is that a person can remember 7 (plus or minus 2) "items" in short-term memory.

31 Could you remember all the letters?
Chunking Could you remember all the letters? Probably Not!!!! 14 letters exceeds the capacity of your short term memory. If you can’t remember it in the short term, you wont remember it in the long term!

33 The Exam Question Words in the question may throw you off completely…but don’t panic! Step by step process: Highlight the command words in the question Pick out the key words to help you understand the question Plan your answer, making sure you’ve answered the command word DESCRIBE EVALUATE COMPARE CONTRAST EXPLAIN

34 VAK Learning Styles Visual
The Questionnaire I remember things better if I write them down When I think of spellings I picture them in my head I have to look at someone when they speak to me I find it difficult to concentrate when there’s a noise I like looking at maps and pictures I am not very good at remembering jokes I like to doodle and make notes when I learn something new I am good at thinking of ideas in my head I remember people’s faces I like to make lists When I get a new idea I like to write it down or draw a picture I learn a practical skill best by watching someone do it I love doing crosswords and word searches Number of Ticks for Visual

35 Auditory Number of Ticks for Auditory
I remember things better if I hear them I like to discuss things before I start to work I work better if I’m not alone I would rather hear new things than read about them I sometimes look out of the window even though I am listening I don’t like working on more than one task at a time I remember people’s voices I love telling jokes I like learning the words of songs and rhymes I like reading and writing poetry I remember things by ‘hearing’ them in my head I find it hard to picture things in my head I like reading out loud Number of Ticks for Auditory

36 Kinaesthetic Number of Ticks for Kinaesthetic
I hate listening to instructions – I’d rather have a go I don’t like sitting still I use my hands to describe things I like to walk around when I’m working My desk looks messy to everyone else but I Know where things are I like to talk out loud when I’m working I like to work on projects and designing things I like to plan my work in my head before I begin I hate checking my work after I have finished I sometimes take notes but I never use them I like to act and do drama I don’t mind noise when I work It sometimes takes me a while to get started on a new project Number of Ticks for Kinaesthetic

37 Learning Styles Methods and Resources
Visual Write out notes using different coloured pens Draw diagrams and charts Use timelines Re-write facts, formulas, information, notes and pin them around your room Use pictorial reminders Use highlighters Visually organise your notes into columns, page sections and forms Use maps Auditory Discuss facts, concepts and ideas with a friend Do homework in a group Listen to tapes or record notes Walk around and talk through your notes Use rhymes and songs to memorise facts, times-tables etc. Give presentations and speeches to yourself Read aloud Use auditory reminders Kinaesthetic Make models Take plenty of study breaks – Kinaesthetic learners need more breaks than visual or auditory Move around while learning something new Hold a stress ball Write notes on post-it notes and arrange them into topics Use body pegs method of revising key points – attach a key word to a part of the body with an action Label diagrams Re-enact information Go on site visits

38 Summary Plan Use different revision techniques
Have fun with your revision Seek help!: Don’t go it alone. They say a problem shared is a problem halved. Relax: Don’t panic! Start revising early and stay calm I always find that colour helps me to visulaise a page. For example using highlighters and different coloured paper.
