1 Article Critiquing ‘Teachers’ Thoughts On the Integration of Computer Games in the ESL Classroom in Nigeria’ XU TENG

2 Part of a PHD project Published in a journal called Proceedings of the European Conference on Games Based Learning P The author called Ruphina Anyaegbu This research happened in primary school in Nigeria This research is a short-term study, which started from the last of February to the end of March 2010

3 The aim of this research is to solve two questions:
What are the teacher’s thoughts and concerns on the integration of education computer games in teaching English as a second language? What are the possible factors that might hinder the effective integration of educational computer games in an English language class?

4 METHODS Case Study Observation Interviewing

5 CASE STUDY Participants:
9 private primary school teachers in Lagos state in Nigeria 5 teachers represented School A 4 teachers represented School B (all these teachers held Bachelors degrees and are computer literate)

6 CASE STUDY Date collection
Time: from the last week of February to the end of March 2010 This study lasted for 5 weeks in school A This study lasted for 3 weeks in school B The first week was spent in meetings which introduced MINGOVILLE to the teachers Classes started at 8 am and the length of each class was 70 minutes

7 CASE STUDY Date analysis
Teachers agreed that the potential of computer games in English learning cannot be ignored Teachers accepted that computer games, such as MINGOVILLE is an effective way to attract primary school students’ attention Teachers agreed that computer games helped improve the students’ pronunciations Teachers agreed that computer games motivated students to learn English effectively

8 OBSERVATION Male teachers are more interested in game-based teaching and learning Game-based learning can improve both teachers and students computer skills Computer games can motivate students in English learning Large population of students is difficult to control in game-based classroom

9 INTERVIEW Students can play and learn at the same time
Class activities become alive Students do not want the class to end All the students do their homework Computer games attract students’ attention in class Educational games should be related to the school curriculum Lack of computers and internet access in students’ home Most parents do not like their children to play computer games Teachers are lack of computer skills Teachers do not have enough time to design teaching plan

10 RESULTS MINGOVILLE and other educational computer games are acceptable in Nigerian primary schools, but there are still many barriers: Teachers do not understand their role in a game-based classroom Lack of time to master the game Lack of time to design plans High cost of computer facilities and computer software Teachers negative attitude on the integration of games in primary schools

11 COMMENTS This study only surveyed teachers’ attitude towards computer games in English learning and ignored the students’ attitude. The time of this study is short, only one month Lack of specific data
