What skills does an effective leader need to have? Why are these skills important when leading others? Activity – Leadership contract Time: 20 minutes Make a list of skills that are associated with the ‘good leader’ and list of those that the ‘bad leader’ represents. Select several from each list that you can try to be/do/work towards during your sports leadership course. Create a contract where you can ‘sign up’ to these ideals. Tutor notes –

7 Leadership behaviours

8 How should a leader behave?
Sometimes leaders do not behave in a way that we expect them to… Activity – How should a leader behave? Time: 60 minutes Show some clips of leaders behaving in different ways. Some of the leaders you see will display behaviour that is appropriate to the situation, some will not! Note down the different behaviours you see, identifying if it is appropriate or not and for each you spot, suggest the effect that the behaviour had on those being led. Share your thoughts with the rest of the group and see if you can create a list of desirable and undesirable behaviours that a leader should aspire to.

9 Leadership behaviours
Examples of desirable leadership behaviours include: Tolerance Respect Resilience Approachable Positive attitude Commitment Any others?

10 Working as part of a team
Many of the leadership skills and behaviours will be necessary for effective teamwork. You’ll need to work successfully with others throughout your course.

11 Working as part of a team
Activity – Square bashing Time: 30 minutes In groups of 8, mark on the floor a 3x3 grid (masking tape works well) made up of 9 x 1mx1m squares. Each person stands in a square and selects a number between 1 and 8 at random. Work as a group to move positions, so that people numbered 1, 2 and 3 are on the top row, 4, 5 and 6 in the middle row and 7 and 8 on the bottom row. One square will be empty Players can only: Move sideways or up and down the grid (no diagonal moves allowed) Move to an empty square Move one square at a time. You may not ‘leapfrog’ another player. After the activity discuss the leadership skills and behaviours that were used/needed/displayed and analyse the effect that each one had on the success of the activity and team cohesion.

12 Tasks Reminder – you need to have completed Tasks 1.1 and 1.2 from your LER. These will be assessed by your tutor.

Where would you like to be? - Decide which skills you will focus on developing and why/how doing this will improve your ability to lead effectively. Bridge the gap - Make a plan that is SMART in order to bridge the gap that currently exists. Tutor notes –

18 Roles and responsibilities of sports officials
Being an official doesn’t just mean being the referee or umpire; lots of sports use a range of different officials to do many different jobs. Activity – Roles and responsibilities of sports officials Time: 60 minutes Select a sport (or you may be allocated one) and investigate: Which officials are involved? What are they called? Do they have specific kit and/or equipment that helps them do the job? What are their responsibilities? What skills do they need in order to do their job effectively? Create a poster or presentation to share your findings with the rest of the group. Tutor notes –

19 Taking on the role of an official
Activity – Stop the game Time: 60 minutes Your tutor will organise a small sided, conditioned invasion game to be played. You will be asked to stand at the side of the pitch whilst play is in progress and, at appropriate times, to stop the game and add in a new rule. You must make sure your ‘stop’ is good (loud, effective, confident) and that all players understand the rule you introduce. Remember to use a demonstration if necessary and to check understanding. Afterwards, discuss what this activity taught you about taking on the role of an umpire or referee.

20 Task Reminder – you need to have completed Task 1.4 from your LER. This will need to be assessed.

Remember that the opportunities that you identify do not have to be confined to sport, they can be across all areas of the organisation. Are there areas that might benefit from an increased number of leaders? Or that currently don’t have any leaders but could do? Tutor notes –
