Eva Rothschild

Personal Life Eva Rothschild was born in 1972 in Dublin, Ireland, to an ‘ordinary middle-class family’. Her Uncle was also an artist although art was not seen as ‘an ideal’ in the family. She came to the UK via Glasgow where she lived before moving to London. She lives in London with her three sons.

Dublin

Professional Life She studied Fine Art at the University of Ulster, Belfast between 1990 and Then she continued her education, completing a Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmith’s College, London. Her work is inspired by 1960s and 1970s art movements, such as Minimalism, but she contrasts this with an interest in elements of magic and spiritualism. As she describes ‘ideas of faith, death, magic, things that are all very messy…’ She is very materials focused, using materials including, Plexiglas, leather and paper. As well as sculpture she also makes wall-based works and videos. She has representation in both London (by Steve Shave/Modern Art) and in New York (by 303 Gallery)

This sculpture explores the relationship between the abstract and figurative. Made of welded steel rods and black and red leather strips, the leather strips are wrapped tightly around the upper part of the sculpture and left loose over the lower third. This merging of industrial and craft processes is typical of her work. The sculpture appears to be ‘magically floating’ according to Eva. (Eva Rothschild in Conversation, Tate Britain, London, 6 October 2009). Like many of her pieces ‘Knock Knock’ appears to defy gravity. The overall effect is one of delicacy, this has connotations of instability and mutability, which are often seen in Eva’s work. Knock Knock 2005

This sculpture draws the viewer in, causing them to question the relationship between volume and mass, skin and structure, surface and edge. Like many of her works this piece, addresses her fascination with the spiritual and ritualistic elements of sculptures. The flat Perspex triangles have circular shapes cut into them and are connected together with other linear element. Legend 2009

Tumbling Dice 2014 "The ideal way to look at art is to be permanently confused.”~ Eva Rothschild

‘For me, making work is about creating something experiential – visual, physical, spatial – but also something that refuses legibility, or an immediate summing-up. It just is itself. I guess I have a phenomenological take on it.’~ Eva Rothschild (Quoted in Slyce, p.83.)

Children’s Commission 2012: Eva Rothschild Boys and Sculpture
Every summer, the Whitechapel Gallery commissions an artists to make work that engages with children. Eva Rothschild decided to make a film showing how a group of boys (aged 6 – 12) interact with artwork in a gallery. They first explore the space, then begin to touch, then eventually dismantle the sculptures in a destructive, yet playful way. Through the film she addresses the ways in which boys engage with materials and making objects, but also highlights the ways in which the fields of sculpture and contemporary art are dominated by men.
