1 Starry Starry night

2 Into Space What is in space? People want to know.
Men and women make machines that take the pictures of things in space

3 Milky way This is a picture of a galaxy. There are many, many of them in space. This is a special galaxy. It is called the Milky Way. Many, many stars are in the Milky Way. Our sun is one of them . Did you know? The Milky Way has about 400 billion stars. Our sun is one of them.

4 Sun The sun is one star in the Milky Way. It is a ball of burning gas.
It gives us heat and energy on Earth. Did you know? The sun is very large. You could fit more than one million Earths inside it!

5 Solar system Eight planets go around the sun.
They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Did you know? Asteroids go around the sun too. Asteroids are lumps of rock.

6 Rocky Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are closest to the sun
Rocky Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are closest to the sun. They are the hottest Planets. They are made of rock. Did you know? Earth takes 364 days to go around the sun one time.

7 Gas Planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are far from the sun
Gas Planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are far from the sun. They are very cold. They are made of gas and liquid. They are called “gas Giants.” Did you know? People used to call Pluto a planet. In 2006 people stopped calling it a planet. Pluto Neptune Uranus Jupiter Saturn

8 To the Moon! The first people to walk on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. Michael Collins stayed in the Command Module. Did you know? The little white cone holds the crew. It is the only part that will come back to Earth. It is called the Command Module.

9 On the Moon Armstrong and Aldrin put an American flag on the moon.
Did you know? There is no air on the moon. Astronauts carry tanks on their backs.

10 Space stations A space station is up in space.
Scientists do experiments there. Did you know? The space station goes around the Earth almost 16 times a day.

11 Mars Rover People have many questions about Mars.
What does it look like? Is there life on Mars? People sent a robot to Mars. The robot takes pictures and sends them back to Earth. Did you know? Mars is rocky and cold. There may be water on Mars.

12 Into Deep Space Deep Space 1 went into space in 1998.
It sent back pictures of a comet and an asteroid. Scientists stopped using Deep Space 1 in December 2001.But it is still out in space. It will not come back to Earth.

13 What do you know? What is the milky way?
How many Earths would fit inside the sun? How many planets go around the sun? How long does it take to orbit the sun? Which four planets are closest to the sun? What is an asteroid? Why are Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune so cold? Why do astronauts need to carry air to breathe on the moon? What is the sun? What is Mars like? What did Deep Space 1 do?
