What is the conflict? What does it reveal about the narrators parents? DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

19 Collins 2 Close Read Screen Cast p.11 Reread lines on page 11 Notice the difference between Maya’s translation from Mr. Shanaman and her father. What does her translation suggest about Papa? In what ways does Nurzhan’s fight impact Maya? What does her reaction suggest about her? CHALLENGE: Find a quote or example from the text to support your answer. Use the vocabulary word scuffle. 5 lines minimum DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

20 Collins 2 Maya’s translation suggests that papa can be volatile or quick to anger. Her translation minimizes the seriousness of the fight or scuffle so that her brother does not get into too much trouble with her father: ”involved in quite a nasty fight vs. “in a little fight;“ “the other boy…needed two stitches “ vs. “the other boy…was a little hurt.” 4:No spelling errors, More than 5 lines, used the word scuffle 3: One spelling error, 5 lines, used the word scuffle. 2: More than one spelling error, 3-4 lines, did not use scuffle. 1: Multiple spelling errors, 1-2 lines, did not use scuffle. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

24 While Maya admits that her actions were “sort of like telling lies,” she justifies them by saying that “some lies are okay.” She says that she was “scared to death of what Papa might have done.” I also think her actions were justified because Nurzhan had a right to defend himself against the bully. 4:No spelling errors, More than 5 lines, used a quote 3: One spelling error, 5 lines, used a quote 2: More than one spelling error, 3-4 lines, used some evidence 1: Multiple spelling errors, 1-2 lines, did not use evidence Journal Response DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.
