3 What is a Pandemic? Does it mean mass fatalities? What is a pandemic?
A pandemic is a worldwide epidemic of a disease. It does not necessarily mean mass fatalities. A pandemic refers to how far across the globe the disease has spread, rather than its severity, and as such a pandemic can result in a low fatality count. How does it start? It may start mild and become severe, or vice versa. It may also start mild and stay that way, or start severe and stay severe Your own footer Source: World Heath Organization. 4 How can I catch the disease?
And what are the symptoms? How to catch the disease symptoms Outbreaks in humans are now occurring from human-to-human transmission. When infected people cough or sneeze, infected droplets get on their hands, drop onto surfaces, or are dispersed into the air. Another person can breathe in contaminated air, or touch infected hands or surfaces, and be exposed. To prevent spread, people should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing, and wash their hands regularly. Early signs of Pandemic H1N are flu-like, including fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhoea. 1 2 Source: World Heath Organization. 5 Who is most at risk of H1N1? Risk groups
People with respiratory diseases Though people with underlying health conditions are considered more vulnerable to the virus, young and healthy teenagers and adults under 50-years-old have also become seriously ill and in some cases died. Consequently young and healthy teens and adults should seek immediate medical care if they show serious symptoms of this virus. Peaople with pre-existing health conditions – especially people with respiratoy diseases such as asthma 1 People with cronic ilness Such as cardiac conditions, diabetes, etc 2 Other groups at risk include Pregnatn women & people with morbid obestity 3 Source: World Heath Organization. 6 How can I protect myself and others?
Your own sub headline 2 1 3 Avoid contact with people with H1N1 Precautions Should I waer a mask? The best way to protect yourself from H1N1 is to avoid close contact with people who show influenza-like symptoms (trying to maintain a distance of about 1 metre if possible) and taking the following measures. Avoid touching your mouth and nose; Clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, or cleanse them with an alcohol-based hand rub on a regular basis (especially if touching the mouth and nose, or surfaces that are potentially contaminated); Reduce the time spent in crowded settings if possible; Improve airflow in your living space by opening windows; Practise good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active. If you are not sick you do not have to wear a mask. If you are caring for a sick person, you can wear a mask when you are in close contact with the ill person and dispose of it immediately after contact, and cleanse your hands thoroughly afterwards. If you are sick and must travel or be around others, cover your mouth and nose. Using a mask correctly in all situations is essential. Incorrect use actually increases the chance of spreading infection. Source: World Heath Organization. Read more at: PowerPointing.com is not responsible for the information about H1N1 Your Logo

8 What should I do if I think I have H1N1?
Patient self-care Stay at home and keep away from work, school or crowds. Rest and take plenty of fluids. Wash your hands with soap and water often and thoroughly, especially after coughing or sneezing. Inform family and friends about your illness and try to avoid contact with people What should I do if I think I have H1N1? The symptoms of Pandemic H1N1 in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people who have been infected with the virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting Spotting the Symptoms Have difficulty breathing or chest pain Have purple or blue discoloration of the lips are vomiting and unable to keep liquids down Has seizures (for example, uncontrolled convulsions) Is less responsive than normal or becomes confused Seek medical help If you: Source: World Heath Organization. 9 H1N1 Vaccine How is the vaccine given?
Some vaccines contain inactivated (or killed) viruses. These vaccines are given by injection into the upper arm for most people. In infants and younger children the thigh is the preferred site for the vaccine shot. Is it safe? Outcomes of studies completed to date suggest that pandemic vaccines are as safe as seasonal influenza vaccines. Side effects seen so far are similar to those observed with seasonal influenza vaccines. Source: World Heath Organization. 10 General information on the disease
Faq about H1N1 1 2 3 Catching the disease Outbreaks in humans are now occurring from human-to-human transmission. When infected people cough or sneeze, infected droplets get on their hands, drop onto surfaces, or are dispersed into the air. Another person can breathe in contaminated air, or touch infected hands or surfaces, and be exposed. What are the symptoms of H1N1? Early signs of Pandemic H1N are flu-like, including fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhoea. Why are we so worried about this pandemic possibility when thousands die every year from seasonal epidemics? Seasonal epidemics occur every year and we are able to treat the virus with seasonal vaccines. A pandemic is a worldwide epidemic. It is a new virus and one to which the populations will have no immunity Source: World Heath Organization. Read more at: PowerPointing.com is not resposible for the information about H1N1 Your Logo
