Cricket Activator:- Retaining Players & Gaining Volunteers
ECB club strategy highlights 5 key factors and particularly important is the need to recruit more volunteers and also retain adult cricketers. The recent Sport and Recreation Alliance survey highlighted that finding and retaining players and volunteers was a major issue facing many clubs. . You could also use the “know your volunteers sheet” to also illustrate how reliant your club is on older volunteers. Draw attention to how under used young people are as key volunteers, whilst also highlighting that through volunteering young people could gain skills, experience and qualifications which could help them get a job or help with university and college applications. Stress that by involving the young people at your club as volunteers will not only help reduce the burden on the current club volunteers but also help to retain the young people as players and help the transition into senior cricket The key message that by using the cricket activator course it can help retain young players and create a warm and friendly environment throughout the club

To give opportunity for young people at cricket clubs
The Key Objectives:- To give opportunity for young people at cricket clubs between the age of 14 and 25 to acquire skills and competency in leadership that will allow them to volunteer within their cricket club and/or school, colleges or university To retain junior members between in cricket as a sport by investing quality time and resources into a specialised volunteering programme. Underline the reason for the course and how it is about providing a friendly and supportive environment at your club for young volunteers Also emphasise that the course is about looking a range of volunteer roles and not just assisting with coaching sessions – it maybe that the activators help with a number of different roles or projects through the season and this could be planned in advanced and talked about in detail. For example Paint the scoreboard Help score a junior matches Help manage and organise kwik cricket sessions Support groundsman on match days Also underline the commitment needed for the young volunteers to attend the course and then carry out 25 hours of volunteering and the support needed for parents to help them during and after the course

This course will enable you to
• Understand the range of different Cricket Activator roles. Deliver a project or event which has been identified by the club • Understand and put into practice the expectations of Cricket Activators. • Promote cricket, activity and opportunities to participate. • Know the pathways for Cricket Activators and for participants to be involved in cricket. The course is split up into 2 separate modules and will be delivered as an interactive workshop usually over two separate 2 hour sessions. Give an over view of the 2 separate modules that are contained within the course so that parents and candidates have some initial information about the overall content Explain that there will be need to be some pre-prep work completed and explain what this might be – if possible please liaise with your County Cricket Board to schedule dates and times of the course. Running these during half term and holiday periods is best and try to avoid the lead up to exams. Also give details of your course such as date, times, venue and cost to either club, candidate or both

The Project Discuss in detail the project which you have in mind and all the different roles which will be required and how this is an introduction and young volunteers can progress onto further roles within the club once they have completed the initial project. Also mention about the V cricket awards – recording hours volunteered and the rewards which they can received at 25, 50 and 100hours. Projects can be wide a varied such as Organising an under 17 T20 competition Organising Friday night kwik cricket junior tournaments on Friday Or Fundraising or social events NWCF Also please discuss these with your County Board as they will be able to advise you and support you with projects and give good examples of what has worked well at other clubs Please also take time to stress that this is the first step to volunteering and that the clubs will support the young players as the progress onto other volunteering opportunities
