2 Emerging Risks There are a number of emerging risks that are presenting themselves as fast as technology changes and new innovations are developed. Some examples are.... AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES CYBER 3-D PRINTING NANOTECHNOLOGY WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY TELEMEDICINE And the list goes on and on

5 Autonomous Vehicles Uber, Ford, Volvo, and GM have announced plans for fleets of self driving vehicles Tesla has announced that all of their vehicles will have the hardware needed to be operated fully autonomously Whether you like it or not, most auto companies predict that autonomous vehicles will be a mainstay on US roads and highways by 2021 Currently, only four states and the District of Columbia allow vehicles with limited self driving capabilities to be operated on major highways Uber is piloting autonomous vehicles in Pittsburgh Ford has plans for self-driving cars that will be designed for urban ride-sharing.

How Safe Are They? US Government has recently rolled out guidelines and benchmarks for safe operation of autonomous vehicles Last month, Google marked 2,000,000 miles with its self driving cars How does the software and programming respond? First ever fatality in a Tesla using “Auto Pilot” mode in May Recent study reviewed various crash scenarios to determine how drivers felt about their safety versus other vehicles, pedestrians, etc... Would you ride in a self driving car that was programed to sacrifice the passengers in order to save the lives of others? Programmers will be forced to write algorithms which anticipate situations in which multiple people could be harmed While 90% of vehicle crashes are caused in part by human error, nothing is perfect

20% of US Citizens own a wearable device, that number is expected to rise quickly as these devices gain popularity In the workplace, wearable technology is being used in a variety of ways and industries Road construction Job sites and workplaces Analysis of job tasks Transportation and driving Typical devices include: Fitbit Smart watches Headsets Wearables are typically miniature electronic devises that are worn under, on top of or can even be part of the clothing. The devices capture data and provide feedback on the person/worker There are may pros and cons to the use of this technology

9 Wearable Technologies at the Work or Job Site
Technology can be used to detect when a worker carries too much weight, makes a bad lift, enters a dangerous area or gets too close to the edge of a roof or equipment. SAFETY VEST - MORE THAN JUST REFLECTIVE Safety vests that have dedicated short range communication systems that allow newer vehicles to communicate with the vest via radio signals Workers and vehicles can be alerted to each other’s presence Driverless and autonomous cars could be programmed to automatically avoid construction workers A SMARTER HARDHAT Hardhats that feature a clear visor that can display 3D visual overlays in the wearer’s field of vision 360o wireless camera, allowing a full view of the workers surroundings Designed primarily for industrial work FATIGUE AWARENESS - FOR THOSE OF US THAT STILL DRIVE Smart caps that combine a headband and app that read EEG brain waves to identify which drivers may be falling asleep and prompt them with voice and vibration warning Can we worn under a hardhat, cap or other typical headwear.

Using wearable technology and video to analyze job tasks to pinpoint potential opportunities to improve risks Can measure lumbar flexion, pelvic angle, upper arm elevations, etc... Sensors are synced with video to provide data that can be analyzed and corrective actions identified and tested

Nothing is perfect Need to recognize the psychological and social challenges technology poses Other issues to consider are the collection of sensitive data, data security and potential data breaches
