THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS Year 11 and Year 12 There is a distinct difference between GCSE and A Level/BTEC study. In Sixth Form students are studying fewer subjects but there is an increased expectation of independent study. Students will have Study Periods (not free periods!) on their timetables for this purpose. In Sixth Form, work is not complete when homework is finished! There is always additional, independent work to be carried out.

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS Subject Selection Talk to a number of subjects (staff and students) At this stage there is a free choice (no blocks) Choose subjects which you are good at Choose subjects which you like Choose subjects that will help you Option Blocks will be created using applications received by the deadline There are opportunities to change, although blocks will be set by February 2017

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth Subject Offer 3 or 4 Subjects (BTEC Business Diploma =2, Extended Diploma =3) This retains flexibility We are offering AS Levels at the end of Y12 (except in Music, Art & Dance) Provides focus for the year, nationally moderated examinations and support/incentive at the halfway mark

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth Study Students initially given the freedom to work independently They will be asked to work during Study Periods All students are allocated target grades Parents and Students will be given forecast grades every half term to monitor progress Supervised Study may be set as a result

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth Enrichment Every Wednesday Afternoon is allocated to enrichment activities Examples of current options: Various Sporting options Silver Duke of Edinburgh Primary School Learning Support Independent Cooking School Magazine Volunteering placements Work Experience placements Student Learning Support

16 FitzSixth University Applications
THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth University Applications Sixth Form students (and parents) will be fully supported through the UCAS process Subsidised trip to the University of Essex in October Independent Careers Guidance – Mrs Hindes UCAS process outlined to students in January UCAS & Student Finance Evening for parents in June

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth Speakers A key role of a Sixth Form is to provide inspiration for students. Every fortnight we welcome external speakers, covering a variety of topics areas. Vocational (speakers from a range of jobs) Pastoral (safe driving, the law) Leadership Opportunities (Havens Young Ambassadors, NCS)

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth Aspiration We will fully support students who wish to apply to study at either Oxford or Cambridge, or for Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science There are currently 11 students who are part of this group in Year 12 Trips are currently being organised to Oxford External speakers will be invited in to meetings

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS FitzSixth EPQ The EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) is offered to all students in our Sixth Form The EPQ is an opportunity to research an area of interest (not necessarily linked to the curriculum) All students have timetabled lessons on this for the first term, to help build study skills that are relevant, not only for the EPQ, but also for Sixth Form study in general The EPQ provides depth and stretch for students and is well regarded by universities.

THE FITZWIMARC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM TRADITIONAL VALUES – LASTING SUCCESS 16 to 19 Bursary The Government allocates schools a sum of money to distribute to students with financial needs Vulnerable Student Bursary (Students in care) - £1200 Discretionary Tier 1 (Income below £18,000) – up to £800 Discretionary Tier 2 (Income below £22,500) – up to £400 Applications and information are held in the strictest confidence and are made in September 2017

FitzSixth is providing a supportive and academic environment for students FitzSixth provides a continuation of everything that you already know about The FitzWimarc School
