1 Application Life Cycle Management (ALM) Tools, 2012
Placeholder for text (substitute your own text; delete when not used) Bottom Line: Current application life cycle management (ALM) tools help integrate disparate software development life cycle (SDLC) tools and disciplines and provide good insight into project status and health. Vendor offerings remain widely diverse in terms of supported capabilities, and the tools continue to evolve as the crowded vendor marketplace redefines the meaning of "ALM." Expect continued market volatility for the next few years as the market consolidates. 1

2 Application Life Cycle Management (ALM) Tools, 2012
Placeholder for text (substitute your own text; delete when not used) Context: Development teams find themselves slowed by aging SDLC infrastructure and tools that don't talk to each other. Business sponsors have been traditionally unsatisfied with their ability to track application project status and to hold teams accountable. Development projects have become more complex, and teams now realize that they can no longer afford to work without stronger tool integrations. Conversely, organizations fear going "all in" on ALM tools because of the possibility of vendor lock-in and the lack of integrations with their favorite best-of-breed tools. 2

Placeholder for text (substitute your own text; delete when not used) Take-Aways: The ALM tool market is complex, crowded and in the midst of consolidation. More than 20 vendors share the market space, each offering ALM solutions for varying sets of SDLC tools: ALM tools act as the "glue" that integrates SDLC functionality: They provide project intelligence by aggregating data from disparate SDLC tools. They associate related artifacts from different SDLC tools (e.g., requirements, models, code, tests, defect reports and fixes) so that teams can trace and follow them throughout the development cycle. They enable automated workflow across separate functions of the SDLC. 3

More than 20 vendors share the market space, each offering ALM solutions for varying sets of SDLC tools: The ALM market is segmented in several ways: Products integrate SDLC tools using either tightly coupled or federated models. Products support different sets of SDLC functionality; this is often determined by the scope of tools existing in the vendor's portfolio. Products may provide different functionality based on customer industry. Vendors are experimenting with software as a service (SaaS) and freemium licensing models in addition to the traditional client/server model. 4

More than 20 vendors share the market space, each offering ALM solutions for varying sets of SDLC tools: Vendors are currently trying to expand ALM access to roles traditionally considered outside of the development group. Although most of the heavyweight ALM systems support open-source SDLC tools, they currently provide less support for proprietary best-in-breed solutions. 5

ALM tools focus only on the development phase of application life cycle — rather than on portfolio and operational management — and current incarnations of tools help you automate team workflows and encourage more-visible development environments. The market will face large changes in the future as it consolidates from its currently crowded space to a more sustainable number of vendors. 6
