1 Online Adjunct Training Modules
Dr. Dexter Davis Dr. Tim Newman Dr. Robert Prior Dr. Timothy Rice Ms. Piper Uhlig Dr. Pamela Wojnar In March 2015, COSMA saw a need to create online adjunct training modules, and in an effort to fill this need, a request for proposals was sent to the COSMA membership to create adjunct training modules, and the proposal submitted by these six individuals was awarded the grant in June of last year.

2 WHO ARE THE LEARNERS? New or current faculty Graduate students
Anyone teaching online, or wanting to teach online While the focus of the grant proposal was to create modules for faculty new to teaching online, the modules are designed to help all faculty. Whether currently teaching, or interested in teaching online undergraduate or graduate courses in sports management, sports leadership, or similar degree programs, there’s something to be learned from the modules. The online training modules are designed for sport management faculty at all levels, and focus on new and adjunct faculty. This includes doctoral students teaching classes for the first time. The use of adjunct faculty is increasing as budgets remain the same or shrink, and full-time faculty alone don’t have the time or expertise to teach all areas of sport management. Adjunct faculty are often individuals from the sport industry who are in transition to academic positions, or have a desire to give back to the profession through teaching. They have expertise and experience in the profession, which is invaluable to a sport management program and its students. Additionally, doctoral students often teach, or serve as teaching assistants. While they may take concurrent symposia about teaching methodology and pedagogy, not all do, and the quality and relevance of these symposia vary widely. While all doctoral students have faculty supervisors, each supervisor’s approach to introducing the doctoral student to the classroom is different. Adjuncts and doctoral students are a great way to distribute the workload, and provide additional expertise to sport management programs, they don’t always have teaching know how and experience to go with their subject matter knowledge. Adjunct faculty and doctoral students are required to approach this multifaceted task of teaching online without much instruction, training or guidance. This is the void the adjunct training modules seek to fill.

3 ONLINE ADJUNCT TRAINING MODULES
What are they? Why are they needed? For whom are they designed? What do they address? These adjunct training modules provide a high-quality training program that reviews the basic aspects of teaching and pedagogy, in an effort to offer much needed training and guidance for adjuncts and doctoral students before they stand in front of the classroom for the first time. Given varying needs, time availability, and cost constraints, online modules that deliver on demand material is the preferred format. There are different techniques and strategies faculty should use when teaching online, as compared to teaching in a traditional brick and mortar classroom, and the modules address these, which makes them useful for anyone teaching online.

4 TOPICS COVERED Introduction to Online Learning
Today’s student: How they learn Teaching basics Assessing student learning Classroom management Managing student needs and conduct Legal Issues and risk management These are the topics covered by the modules, and they are designed to build one upon the next, ultimately leading to a certificate of completion. While the modules are designed to be taken in their entirety, each one can also stand alone for individuals who want to focus on specific topics, or might need a refresher in a specific content area. The modules will all have similar components and have a similar look and feel in terms of graphics, voice, and tone, which ties them together. While these are the current topics, we are open to topic suggestions of other topics if there are areas anyone feels should be included in this training program. This is one of the questions on the end of conference survey.

5 COST & REGISTRATION COSMA members = FREE Non-COSMA members = $100
If they join ($30 cost) as part of their registration, cost will be $60 User ID & password created when registering Module access will expire 2 months after registration Users can re-register The modules will be free to COSMA members, while non-members will be charged $100, or if they join COSMA as an individual member the fee would be $60. Users will need to register for the modules and create a user id and password in order to gain access to the course. Access to the modules will expire after two months in an effort to ensure the modules are used in a concentrated manner. Users can always request access to the modules again.

6 FORMAT OF MODULES 15 to 20 minutes in length
Provide both audio and visual components Include quiz at end of each module to assess learning Users must pass quiz to receive certificate and/or move to the next module Each module is 15 to 20 minutes long, and are designed in an asynchronous online format so users can take the courses at their convenience. The modules include audio and visual components such as interviews, examples, videos, and graphics in an effort to enhance learning and satisfy the variety of learning styles of users. At the end of each module is a short true and false/multiple choice quiz to assess learning. Users who have signed up for the entire series of modules will not be able to move on to the next module until the pass the quiz. Those who are taking only one module, will not receive a certificate of completion until they pass the quiz.

7 TECHNICAL DETAILS Designed in Moodle
Compatible with all operating systems & browsers Modules are password protected Access to modules expires after two months Users can re-up at any time The training modules use the Moodle learning management system, which is a free, open-source system, and one of the most popular and easiest to use learning management systems on the market. Moodle is a “learning platform designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a single robust secure and integrated system to create personalized learning environments.” It is compatible with all operating systems and browsers too.

8 COURSE DEMONSTRATION Open Powerpoint – Login and show course. Go through the Teaching Basics Module.

9 TOPICS COVERED Introduction to Online Learning
Today’s student: How they learn Teaching basics Assessing student learning Classroom management Managing student needs and conduct Legal Issues and risk management As a reminder, these are the topics that will be covered in each module. Together, they make a complete course for which people who complete all modules will earn a certificate of completion from COSMA. However, the modules can also be taken individually. This also gives us the flexibility of revamping the course down the road if necessary. And remember, if you have any suggestions for additional modules, please include them on the end of conference survey you turn in to Heather, or send her an .
