Paris Salon Culture

2. Course Description
During this twenty-four day Maymester course in Paris, students will explore moments in Parisian salon culture as sites of artistic inspiration and collaboration. In doing so, students will investigate the cross-cultural legacy of Paris, and reflect on their own positions as global ambassadors of music, dance, and culture.

3. Salons
Throughout the history of Paris, artists and intellectuals have gathered in the drawing rooms of notable salonnières to exchange new ideas and refine their aesthetic tastes.

4. Orientations
In addition to receiving a pre-departure handbook and other information, students will have three Orientations the Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of classes:
General – ACCENT services, emergencies, and practical info
Housing – Housing rules
Maymester – Schedule, ice breakers, and Bateaux Mouches

5. Week One Medieval and Early Modern Performing Arts and Patronage
A flâneur’s walking tour of Haussmann’s Paris, from Galerie Vivienne to the Eiffel Tower
Notre Dame
Sainte Chapelle
Left bank excursion, including La Sorbonne, Le Jardin du Luxembourg, and Shakespeare & Co.
Excursion to Versailles
Opéra performance at the Opéra Bastille (Ravel/Puccini)

6. Week Two Artistic Inspiration in the Belle Époque
Montmartre
Musée D’Orsay
Musée du Louvre
Palais Garnier
Dance performance for Paris Opéra Ballet at the Opéra Garnier (Schchter/Pite)

7. Week Three Modernity, Progress, Cultural Appropriation
Centre Pompidou
Grande Mosquée de Paris
Institut du Monde Arabe
Musée de quai Branly Jacques Chirac Performative final presentations will take place on Thursday, May 31, followed by a farewell picnic.

Local concerts and dance performances
Free museum nights
Cooking class
Excursion to the marché aux puces de Saint-Ouen
Walking tour of street art in Belleville
Dance classes at local studios (all students)

10. Program ACCENT Logistical and staff support
Access to center with computers, a library, and a study area
24/7 access to an emergency contact
HEALTH INSURANCE
USC Aetna Health Insurance Plan or USC Health Insurance Plan for Students Studying Overseas at an additional cost
SAFETY
Students are considered adults and are expected be responsible.

11. Program
LODGING
Double/triple occupancy rooms in shared student apartments
TRANSPORTATION
Pick-up from airport if arriving on Saturday (maybe)
Taxi from ACCENT to your apartments
Paris transit card for bus and metro
MEALS
No meals will be covered by the program expenses, though we may decide to have group dinners.

12. Costs
FIXED COSTS Transportation: $160 Accommodations: $925 Activities & Student ID: $600 Administrative Costs: $400 ACCENT Fee: $625 Total: $2,700
PERSONAL COSTS Airfare: $700-$1,500 Food: $1,800 ($75/day) Overseas Health Insurance: $184 Additional Units: $1,800/unit And incidentals, including cash for smaller performances and other activities.
Fixed costs are subject to change and assume 24 student enrollment
All expenses are financial aid eligible (loans) with a petition
