2. Lesson 1 (pp )
A resource is a material found in nature that is used by living things.
One resource above the ground is air. A resource below the ground is oil.
Renewable resources can be replaced during a lifetime. (Examples: plants, animals, trees)
Reusable resources can be used again and again. (Examples: air and water)
Nonrenewable resources cannot be replaced in a lifetime. When they are used up, there will be no more. (Examples: coal, soil, metals)

3. Lesson 2 (pp )
Soil is an important resource made of water, air, humus, and tiny pieces of rock.
Humus is made of dead plants and animals.
There are 3 different layers of soil: topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock.

Sand, silt, and clay are types of soils. Clay has very, very tiny grains of rocks.
Loam is a mixture of humus, clay, silt, and sand.
Most soils found on farms are loam.

4. Lesson 3 (pp. 278-285) The land we live on is an important resource.
Metals, gemstones, and coal are dug up, or mined, from the land.
-- What are some positive and negative effects people can have on the land???
Pollution is any harmful material in the environment.
Pollution can happen to the land, water, or air.
Pollution in the air and land can get into the water when there is rain.

5. Lesson 4 (pp. 286-293) To protect Earth’s resources, we must conserve.
Conservation is saving resources by using them wisely.
We can use the 3 R’s:
1.)reduce- use less resources (take showers not baths, turn off the TV when you aren’t watching)
2.) reuse- use a resource again and again (wear older siblings clothes, reuse toys)
3.)recycle- break a product down or change it to make something new (Plastic can be recycled into benches, doormats, and much more.)
