12 Coaching Levels in FITA How many levels in coaching should
FITA develop? Coaches Role = help in the development of the archer. Identify the steps in the development of the archer. Identify the needs of the archer in each step. Develop a coaching level for each step including specific knowledge. This slide explains the thinking process of the FITA Coaches Committee to determine how many coaching levels will be useful in archery. This philosophy led us to three levels. These levels 1, 2 and 3 will be presented in the next few slides. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

13 Coaching Levels in FITA
THE NEEDS OF THE BEGINNER: Discover the fundamentals of archery in a way that the beginner can be capable of practicing any type of archery (including any type of bow or discipline). COACHING REQUIREMENTS: To instruct the basic TECHNIQUES & SAFETY fundamentals of archery: To any beginner: child, adolescent, adult, senior or handicapped person. To an individual or a group of beginners. In an archery club, a school, a community centre, a rehabilitation centre or at a tourist centre. In an enthusiastic way MAJOR DIFFICULTY: Prevent teaching a specific technique too early in development. SOLUTION: * The Coaches Manual should correlate with the objectives and difficulties of the level of learning. Simple presentation of the level 1. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

14 Coaching Levels in FITA
ARCHERS NEEDS: Improve the efficiency in one or two kinds of archery, emphasizing a combination of type of bow and discipline. At this level some archers choose to participate at a recreational level and others at a competitive level. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Be able to increment the capabilities of the archer in some disciplines. MAJOR DIFFICULTY: Being competent in various archery disciplines and divisions. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

16 Makes the archers progressing.
After the course What is a good coach? Makes the archers progressing. Is a certified coach a good coach? Certification = recognised potential to become a good coach But still a lot to do: learning & development of know-how’s. What do we need to get progressing archers? Hence to become a good coach This slide explains the thinking process of the FITA Coaches Committee to determine how many coaching levels will be useful in archery. This philosophy led us to three levels. These levels 1, 2 and 3 will be presented in the next few slides. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

17 Efficient coaching environment
“BEING A GOOD COACH IS NOT ENOUGH” National Archery Association Objectives: Have archers who progress inside the elite world of archery. Criteria: Efficient Coaching Assistance Access to a high level of coaching services Dynamic network of competitions Good administration Objectives/Services Contract: Between the National Archery Association and the archer. Example of a National Team Structure. National Team Program COORDINATOR To produce elite archers and to maintain them at top level, it is not enough for a coach to know the archery, training and teaching techniques. A coach also needs to work in an efficient environment/organisation. First the coach must know the objective of the sport organisation he/she works for. In dot blue 4, ‘Good administration’, major efficiency criterions of a sport organisation. In white some suggestions for the operation and structure for the National teams. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

18 Efficient coaching environment
CRITERIA: Efficient Coaching Assistance Access to a high level of training services Dynamic network of competitions Good Administration by the National Archery Federation Good Coaching Certification Program A strong Continual Education Program for Coaches Availability / Professional Coaches Level of coaching assistance appropriate to the training needs of the archer at the various steps of his/her evolution. Details of the criterion ‘Efficient Coaching assistance’. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

19 Efficient coaching environment
CRITERIA: Efficient Coaching Assistance Access to a high level of training services Dynamic network of competitions Good Administration by the National Archery Federation Archery facilities and equipment in good condition. Access to the archery facilities all year. Adapted schedule to suit work or school Availability of general sports facilities: gymnasiums, strengthening room, pools, etc. Support of specialists for developing general physical capabilities, psychology, and for medical assistance. Details of the criterion ‘Access to a high level of training services’. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

20 Efficient coaching environment
CRITERIA: Efficient Coaching Assistance Access to a high level of training services Dynamic network of competitions Good Administration by the National Archery Federation Various levels of tournaments (in accordance with the archers ability). Varying organized levels of tournaments to prepare the archers for any level of competition. A tournament calendar with many events in order to personalize the schedule of competitions for each archer. Judges with a high grade of expertise. Excellent Media exposure Details of the criterion ‘Dynamic network of competitions’. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

21 Efficient coaching environment
CRITERIA: Efficient Coaching Assistance Access to a high level of training services Dynamic network of competitions Good Administration by the National Archery Federation Role-players recognition A comprehensive and fair decision process Good communication at all levels Transparency of all activities Good methods of administering the budget Details of the criterion ‘Good Administration by the National Archery Federation’. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

22 Olympic Solidarity The IOC is your partner What is it? Its Programs:
Olympic Scholarships for Athletes- London 2012 Development Program for Youths- 2016 Youth Olympic Games – Singapore 2010 Technical Courses Coach Scholarships National Sports Structure Development Program for Sports Administrators Higher Education for Sports Administrators Regional Forums Olympic Games Participation Sports Medicine Sports and Environment Women and Sports International Olympic Academy Sports for Everyone Culture and Education See complete listing: List of the OS programs. The 3 first (in Yellow) are for the athletes, 4-6 (in White) for coaches – 7-8 (in Yellow) for Sport administrators, the following ones in White are usually not specific to one sport. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

23 National Archery Federation National Olympic Committee
The IOC is your partner OLYMPIC SOLIDARITY Program Application National Archery Federation Development Program NAF identifies the needs / weaknesses Identification of the Olympic Solidarity Programs that relates to the needs of the NAF Apply for the Program from the National Olympic Committee This slide explains how to apply to an OS program. Please strongly suggest that a copy of the application be also sent to FITA Development department. Because FITA can inform the OS headquarter (also in Lausanne), then OS can “talk” to the NOC National Archery Federation Archers Coaches Sports Administrator Investigator National Olympic Committee IOC Olympic Solidarity Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

24 FITA and your CAA are your partners
Assistance from FITA Apply to your Continental Archery Association Each year FITA gives some budgets to each CAA, for administration, for Development and also give the revenue from the membership (paid by the countries from the respective region) to the respective CAA. Some CAA’s have also some own revenues (sponsorship, membership, Continental Olympic Associaton…), hence some money is available from the CAA’s as well! Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

25 Efficient coaching environment
National Team Coordinator National Technical Director or National Sports Committee President Many countries have duplicated these two positions within their regions, provinces or states Work closely with the personnel in charge of: - Coaching programs - Athletic services - Competitions - National Archery Federation Administration This slide is for new countries in archery. To inform them of the existence of such a position in many National Archery Federations Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

26 Efficient coaching environment
Example of a National Team Structure Club Teams National and Regional events by clubs have an important role to add value to the membership in a club. Provincial and Regional Teams National Cadet Teams National Junior Teams National Adult Teams National Reserve Team Formed by “young” archers with talent and other members from the adult team who have not reached their individual goals. National Archery Indoor Selection National Archery Field Selection National 3D Selection This slide is for new countries in archery. To inform them of the organisation of the elite – from the club to the National team(s) in many National Archery Federations. The competition by teams of clubs are particularly valuable for the level 1. They can : Involve some archers who have no individual good calibre Generate a better support from the city and other potential partners Motivate the club to better organize the training of their members Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

27 Efficient coaching environment
OBJECTIVES AND SERVICES CONTRACT - Contents Access Criteria – Duration of Collaboration (2 years minimum) What they expect of the archer = progressive personal objectives. What will happen if the archer realizes their objectives J What will happen if the archer fails to reach their objectives L The minimal implication of the archer The behavior expected of the archer once becoming a team member What the Federation will offer the archer and the equipment to realize their objectives Similar contract for the Coach Another suggestion to new countries in archery, the establishment of a contract between the athlete, the coach and the organization (National or Provincial Federation, or the club). Two years are proposed for the first collaboration since everyone can have a bad year. In yellow, a summary of the contract with the archer. In White, the commitment of the organization: support team (coach, physio, …) how many training camps, equipment allocation, money, travels… In Blue, the contract with the coach is quite similar to the one with the athlete, but a decent archery coach should be able to make – at least 80% - of the archers progressing. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

28 The coach MUST strongly assist this person!
Efficient Coaching Attention One of the most common errors is to give excess importance to the technical aspect of training. Experience has demonstrated that a high technical archer in a poor structured environment has very little probability to reach and maintain oneself in the archery elite. Suggestions For every requirement mentioned earlier, a person or committee should be clearly designated as responsible, or the coordinator, in your Archery Federation or at least in the High Level Performance Committee. The coach MUST strongly assist this person! After the course, most of the participants will forget this set of presentations, they will only remind the technical parts of your teaching; they will be eager to use these new techniques with their archers. Fine! But they also have to assist their sport organization (Club, Province or National Archery Association) to build an efficient environment for the couples archers-coaches. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

29 Thank you… Ready to answer your questions!
Self explanatory. Before starting the next day, it would be good to ask the participants what do they remind from this session…. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director
