EOSC Services for Scientists
Paolo Manghi ISTI-CNR
2
EOSC Scientists They use high-level functionality (i.e. User Interfaces) to perform domain specific research activities and generate research artifacts They may have very good understanding of IT opportunities by very limited programming skills They collaborate by sharing and reusing research artifacts and exchanging ideas. The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
3
Resources of interest Services for scientists, services supported through EOSC that can support scientists at performing their research activities and accomplish the relative intermediate tasks Research artifacts, intended as results of science managed by Services, e.g. publications, datasets, scientific software, scientific workflows, notebooks, research packages (e.g. research objects), etc. Research artifacts are described by metadata and possibly meaningfully interlinked Virtual research environments, EOSC workplace that is open, policy-driven, which seemlessly provides (groups) a set of Services serving the needs of a group of scientist The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
4
Services for Scientists
Services aiming at facilitating and supporting the implementation of open science-friendly practices and workflows The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
5
FAIRness of Services FAIRness of data (and research artifacts) is a key property, responsibility of the services. FAIRness of services can be interpreted as a measure of the ability of services to manage content in a FAIR manner We can state that (i) Services managing artifacts should make an effort to produce FAIR data (and other artifacts) (ii) A measure of such “FAIRness” of the services should be devised The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
6
Service classes Cross-Users Services Collaboration
Scholarly Communication Use/group/pipelines Services, share ideas/info Publish artifacts to scientists (consumers) Artifact management: creation/processing, reproduce Deposit, enrich, interlink artifacts Find, reuse artifacts Artifact deposition: preservation/access, validation/certification The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
7
Artifact management: creation/processing
Workflows Management Services for the creation, execution and monitoring of workflows Research Package Management Services for the creation and exploitation of research packages (e.g. reproducibility) Domain/RI Specific Processing Services capable of transparently supporting (possibly in an efficient and scalable way) processing functionalities over input data Automatic metadata enrichment and interlinking services ... The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
8
Artifact deposition: preservation/access and certification/validation
Artifact Repository services where research artifacts can be deposited, curated and made accessible through specific APIs and protocols; Research artifacts preservation services Research artifacts catalogue service(s) Mediator (standard-based) services / APIs PID provisioning/minting services Metadata / profile validation services Policy Compatibility checking services for consumers a d artifacts ToU compatibility-check … The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
9
Collaboration Services
Virtual Research Environments Shared workspace /dropBox-like services ….. Social networking services, aka academic networks Collaborative research services (e.g. Science blogs) for citizens and scientists Shared bibliography collecting services Shared annotation services, e.g. open reviews, notes Services supporting alternative reputation systems ……. The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
10
Scholarly Communication services
Artefact publishing services supporting APIs capable of managing on demand all issues relative to publishing research artefacts License compatibility services, e.g. verifying that the artifacts obtained by reusing others are not violating the original license, artifacts being published do not violate original mandates Subscription & Notification services … Recommender services… … The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
11
Cross-users services Unified authentication and authorization mechanism (Mandatory) Service catalogue (Mandatory) Virtual Research Environments (/Virtual Laboratories/Science Gateways) Factory service The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
12
Questions Should we envisage a finer classification of scientists?
Which are the main service functional areas to be initially mentioned? Can we identify a number of mandatory services of classes of services? Shall EOSC foresee a notion of community/discipline/RI to characterise (label/tag) services, artifacts, metadata formats? FAIRness of services, how pervasive should the definition be? The European Open Science Cloud for Research pilot project is funded by the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation under contract no
