1 Let’s Talk Trash Latoya Callender, PhD student Walden University PUBH Instructor: Dr. Jeff Wu Summer term, 2009 Hi, My name is Latoya Callender. I am a student at Walden University. Today, I am going to “Talk Trash” as you learn about Recycle. The goal of this presentation is to inform you about the process of recycling and why it is very important.

2 A presentation for high school students in Fairfax County Public Schools.
There are 25 high schools within the Fairfax County Public School system. This lesson will be presented in science classes to high school students within the county.

3 Goals and Expectations
The goal of this presentation is to bring awareness and education to the importance of recycling. Currently, all schools do not have a recycling program, in which students are able to separate trash before throwing it out. One of the expectations is that students will become motivated to initiate a recycling program within their school. This program should set up different bins for paper, aluminum, and plastics so that students will be able to separate thrash. It will also be expected that awareness increases the amount of material that is recycled at home.

4 Recycle To alter or adapt for new use without changing the essential form or nature. I know many of you are already familiar with what recycling means. But just to review, when we recycle we alter or adapt material for new use without changing the essential form or nature. In other words, reuse materials that were once used.

5 Residual Universal Hazardous Solid Four Waste Streams
There are four categories in which we can place things to be recycled. First we have residual waste, which is industrial, mining and agricultural waste. Second is Universal waste, which are items such as batteries, fluorescent tubes, mercury thermometers, etc. Third there is hazardous waste which includes some of the universal waste products such as batteries, acids, paints and other chemicals. And last but not least, there is solid waste. Solid waste includes paper, glass, plastics, aluminum etc. For the purpose of this presentation we will focus on the solid waste.

6 How does waste and pollution affect our environment?
Eyesore Bad odor Health hazards Increases insect vectors Increases rodents Costly Besides from being a horrible eyesore to the environment, waste tends is a breathing ground for odor causing microorganisms. When items are not properly disposed, insect and rodent infestation is often an increasing issue. Many of the insects and rodents are vectors for serious illnesses. It’s economic impact accounts for billions of dollars around the world. This organisms do not only affect humans and other animals but they have the potential to destroy agriculture.

7 Glass Paper Aluminum Plastics Common Recycle items
What items do you think can be recycled in your neighborhood? Glass may include bottles and jars. Paper items that may be recycle include books, magazines, newspapers, cardboard boxes, egg cartoons, etc. Soda cans, foil paper and pie pans are just a few of the aluminums items that can be recycled. Plastics that may be recycle include, bottles, bags. But these are only the common things. Theres more…….

8 Other items the can be recycled
Appliances Batteries Bicycles Computers Televisions Fluorescent Light Bulbs Scrap metals Tires There are many items that you can recycle in Fairfax county. Fairfax County host several recycling events in each year. They are located in convenient locations where you could drop off items such as unwanted computers and televisions. In addition to this list, there are many other items listed at

9 Fairfax County, VA Located in northern in 2008
Total Municipal solid waste generated = 1.5 tons per year. Approx. 6 pounds per person per day. State laws Let’s talk about Fairfax County. The total municipal solid waste generated includes non recyclables and recyclables from residences, businesses and institutions. Each jurisdiction in the state of Virginia is required to recycle at least 25% of the trash they generate. Currently, Fairfax County recycles about 35% of our trash each year. That’s about 500 tons of material! Most of our waste comes from businesses. And a little less than half of the waste is comprised of paper and cardboard.

10 Have you ever wondered what happens to all of that garbage?

11 Over 1/3 of what we throw away is recyclable
Over 1/3 of what we throw away is recyclable. When the trash is picked up from your home it is collected on one of two ways. The first is Dual Stream collection, this occurs when the paper and cardboard or placed on the curb separately from glass and bottles and then collected in a truck with separate compartments to keep the items separated. The other method, single stream collection is when paper and bottles are placed in the same container, then collected in a truck that does not have separate compartments. The items are then taking a dumped into eighteen wheeler trunks where they are then taken to privately owned facilities. At these facilities they are either sorted manually or mechanically into their individual components. Then they are mailed and shipped out where they are manufactured into new products. They are then used by companies, who need them. Eventually they end up on the store shelves, where they are available for you to use again.

12 Why is it important to recycle?
So now you know about garbage that is produced in Fairfax county and how it gets recycle. You may be wondering why it is important to recycle. Well the next few slides should answer your

13 Recycling saves energy
Recycling saves energy. This is good for the environment because it means you are burning less fuel and therefore creating less pollution. When new products are manufactured from the raw material obtained from recycled products, it saves a lot of energy which is consumed for the production. When new products are manufactured from ‘virgin materials’, the amount of energy consumed is much higher. 50% less energy is needed to make paper from recycled paper than from tree pulp. 20% less energy needed to make glass from recycled glass than from sand, soda ash and limestone.

14 Recycling saves Natural Resources
Recycle saves natural resources. When we recycle newspaper we do not need to use another tree to produce new paper products. This way, proper recycling can help us preserve our natural resources for our future generations and maintain the balance of the nature. Paper recycling allows fewer trees need to be cut down for paper production.

15 Recycling has many economic benefits.
Recycling saves money. Manufacturers save a lot of money in fuel costs due to the energy savings resulting in the use of recyclables.

16 Recycling saves space for waste disposal.
Recycling saves space. Some of these waste materials belong to non-biodegradable category which takes a long time to decompose. Recycling enables proper usage of these waste products and saves space for landfills.

17 Recycling reduced pollution and saves environmental conditions
Recycling saves the environment. When we recycle newspaper we do not need to use another tree to produce new paper products. This way, proper recycling can help us preserve our natural resources for our future generations and maintain the balance of the nature. Paper recycling allows fewer trees need to be cut down for paper production.

18 It is also important because it…
Stimulates civic Pride Promotes Volunteerism Fosters Collaboration When you recycle in your home community and school you could foster relationships with others. Colleges and Universities are interested in students who are well rounded and show community participation. Some of you may even earn service learning credit.

19 Others may also benefit from your participation in recycling.
Donations will be made to burn victims Earn $ for your school People would be attracted to live and do business in your neighborhood. You can improve the quality of life for young burn survivors and their family by collecting and taking aluminum cans to a local fire station. Every two cans earns a penny for the Aluminum Cans for Burn Children program (ACBC). ACBC use these cans for research and summer camps for kids. For more information go to Fairfax County Public Schools will donate $ to your school if students plan and implement a recycling program. Remember the program has to be implemented by students.

20 Think Globally and Act locally
Recycle So now you know more about where the materials that you use go after you use them. You have also learned about the importance of recycling. There are many things that you can do to make a difference in the environment, and you could start at home and at school. Now it is your turn to make a difference. Think Globally and Act locally
