1 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TOBACCO

2 Why Teens Use Tobacco Friends Family Media
Addicts usually start in their teens. If friends use tobacco, teen will be more likely to as well. Family Children of tobacco users are more likely to use themselves. Media Advertising of tobacco on TV and radio has been banned for over 30 years. Companies still spend $15 billion on ads.

3 QUESTION What people or factors have influenced your decisions about tobacco use?

4 What is Tobacco? Made from dried, processed leaves of tobacco plants.
Tobacco plants naturally produce a chemical that acts as an insecticide. This insecticide is nicotine, a very addictive chemical in tobacco products.

5 Smoked Tobacco Products
Cigarettes Cured shredded tobacco leaves rolled into paper Bidis Imported from India, tobacco in a leaf wrapped in string Kreteks Improted from Indonesia, contain ground clove Cigars Less processed cigarette tobacco. Contains more nicotine

6 Smokeless Tobacco Products
Chewing Tobacco (dip, chew) Poor-quality, ground tobacco leaves mixed with flavorings Wads of chew are placed between the check and gum Snuff Finely ground chewing tobacco Dry powder or oil may be added Most place in mouths between lower lip and teeth, other sniff through nose

7 FACTS TOBACCO CONTAINS MORE THAN 4,000 CHEMICALS
MORE THAN 401 OF THESE CHEMICALS ARE POISONOUS

8 THE 3 MOST POISONOUS CHEMICALS
NICOTINE Addictive chemical found in tobacco. Addictive means causing a physical dependence. Nicotine contains a psychoactive substance that causes a change in a person’s mood and behavior. TAR Solid material in tobacco smoke that condenses into a thick liquid. When these tiny particles enter the lungs, they condense and form a sticky coating on the bronchial tubes…eventually damaging the cilia (tiny hairs that line the bronchial tubes that help to prevent disease). CARBON MONOXIDE A poisonous gas released by burning tobacco. CO interferes with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.

9 POISONOUS CHEMICALS CONTINUED
Formaldehyde used to preserve dead frogs Cyanide found in rat poison Nicotine potent insecticide found in bug spray

10 Nicotine and the Body Short-Term Effects Long-Term Effects
Nicotine is a stimulant. A drug that increases activity of the nervous system. Increased heart rate Increased blood pressure Changes in the brain that can lead to addiction Short-Term Effects Respiratory diseases Cardiovascular disease Several forms of cancer. Long-Term Effects

11 THE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE
WITH EVERY PUFF OF A CIGARETTE, THE NICOTINE INHALED TRAVELS TO THE BLOODSTREAM AND THEN TO THE BRAIN WITHIN 7 SECONDS, YOU WILL FEEL THE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE THIS MEANS THAT THE HEART WILL BEAT MORE QUICKLY, BLOOD PRESSURE WILL INCREASE, AND YOU WILL BEGIN TO FEEL MORE ALERT AND ENERGETIC EFFECTS LAST FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES…WHICH IS WHY A SMOKER USUALLY CRAVES ANOTHER CIGARETTE ABOUT A HALF AN HOUR AFTER THEIR LAST ONE

12 Nicotine Addiction tolerance dependence addiction
People who use tobacco frequently will begin to rely on it for feelings of alertness and pleasure. Ongoing use of nicotine causes the body to build a tolerance. The time it takes to become addicted depends on several factors Genetics, frequency of use, and age addiction dependence tolerance

13 DANGERS TO THE MAJOR PARTS OF THE BODY

14

15 SMOKING- RELATED DISEASES
CANCER FORMATION AND GROWTH OF MALIGNANT, OR DEADLY, CELLS THAT ATTACK AND INVADE HEALTHY CELLS. (CANCERS OF THE LUNG, LARYNX, ESOPHAGUS, BLADDER, KIDNEY, AND PANCREAS) RESPIRATORY DISEASES CHRONIC BRONCHITIS - AN INFLAMATION OF THE BRONCHIAL TUBES IN THE LUNGS AND THE PRODUCTION OF EXCESSIVE MUCUS. (CHRONIC COUGH & BREATHING DIFFICULTIES) EMPHYSEMA - A DISEASE OF THE LUNGS IN WHICH THE TINY AIR SACS LOSE THEIR ELASTICITY. (SHORTNESS OF BREATH) CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE DISEASE OF THE HEART AND BLOOD VESSELS. (HEART ATTACK & STROKE)

16 RISKS OF "PASSIVE" SMOKING
2 TYPES OF SMOKE MAINSTREAM SMOKE THAT IS INHALED DIRECTLY INTO THE MOUTH THROUGH A CIGARETTE, PIPE, OR CIGAR. SIDESTREAM SMOKE THAT ENTERS THE ENVIRONMENT FROM BURNING TOBACCO. 75% OF SMOKE FROM A BURNING CIGARETTE IS SIDESTREAM SMOKE 2X AS MUCH TAR AND NICOTINE 3X AS MUCH CO AS MAINSTREAM SMOKE PASSIVE SMOKER PERSON WHO INHALES THE SIDESTREAM SMOKE OF A CIGARETTE (RISKS: LUNG CANCER, HEART DISEASE, RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS)

17 QUESTION Why does side-stream smoke contain more dangerous chemicals than mainstream smoke?

18 Sidestream Smoke Mainstream Smoke Secondhand, or environmental, smoke is a combination of sidestream and mainstream smoke.

19 Tobacco and Athletic Performance
Don’t get trapped. Nicotine in cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco is addictive. Nicotine… narrows your blood vessels puts added strain on your heart. Smoking can wreck lungs reduce oxygen available for muscles used during sports.

20 Tobacco and Personal Appearance
Yuck! Tobacco smoke can make hair and clothes stink. Tobacco stains teeth and causes bad breath. Short-term use of chewing tobacco can cause cracked lips, white spots, sores, and bleeding in the mouth. Surgery to remove oral cancers caused by tobacco use can lead to serious changes in the face.

21 S0. . . Know the truth. Despite all the tobacco use on TV and in movies, music videos, billboards and magazines---most teens, adults, and athletes DON’T use tobacco. 22 Know the Facts About Youth and Tobacco Use
Kids who use tobacco may Cough and have asthma attacks more often and develop respiratory problems leading to more sick days, more doctor bills, and poorer athletic performance. Be more likely to use alcohol and other drugs such as cocaine and marijuana. Become addicted to tobacco and find it extremely hard to quit. Chewing tobacco and cigars are not safe alternatives to cigarettes; low-tar and additive-free cigarettes are not safe either. Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States causing heart disease, cancers, and strokes.

23 THE END...

24 Advocacy Poster Create a poster advocating avoiding tobacco products because of their short and long-term dangers. Poster should contain… 1 Slogan (original) 1 Fact (from book or notes) 3 pictures showing ST and LT dangers (label) Be smart. Don't start. Bad Teeth Fact: Studies show the teens become addicted to nicotine faster than adults. Lung Cancer Heart Disease
