2 Tennessee Standard 4 – Geometry and Measurement
       Know common equivalences for length (1 meter = 100 centimeters, 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 foot = 12 inches). Make and record measurements that use mixed units within the same system of measurement (such as feet and inches, meters and centimeters).   Use common abbreviations: km, m, cm, in, ft, yd, mi.

3 Think of each inch as a rectangle
Each rectangle is a part of a whole.

7 Each rectangle builds to make a 12 inch ruler.

10 Three feet equal 1 yard

11 If 1 foot is equal to 12 inches,
And 1 yard is equal to 3 feet. How many inches are in one yard? The abbreviation for yard is yd.

12 Yes! You got it! The answer is 36 inches

13 Each rectangle can be divided in half (1/2)

14 On your ruler, it will be slightly shorter.

15 When the ½ inch line is added to our ruler, it looks like this

16 Each rectangle is divided into equal parts.
For example : A rectangle can be divided in to 4 equal parts.

18 Did you notice the ½ inch line is the same as the second ¼ inch line
Did you notice the ½ inch line is the same as the second ¼ inch line. 2/4 is the same as ½. If you eat 2/4 of a pie, you have eaten ½ of the pie. Lets look at that again.
