1 Lessons from working with Global Science Communnities: The MAGIC Experience
Tiwonge Msulira Banda, UbuntuNet Alliance May 27 March, 2017

2 Outline MAGIC at a Glance Global Science Communities

3 MAGIC Project at a Glance
MAGIC: Middleware for collaborative Applications and Global vIrtual Communities Duration: 2 years (May 2015 – April 2017) Funding: co-funded by the EC Aim: Establish a set of agreements for participating World Regions, aiming at consolidating and completing the building blocks of middleware necessary for the establishment of a marketplace of services and real-time applications for international and inter-continental research groups which facilitates mobility and the work of global science communities.

4 Partners Grant Partners MoU Partners RedCLARA (Latin America)
GÉANT (Europe) RENATA (Colombia) RNP (Brazil) SURFnet (Netherlands) REUNA (Chile) CEDIA (Ecuador) CUDI (Mexico) RENATER (France) GRNET (Greece) CESNET (Czech Republic) CKLN RedCLARA (Caribbean) RedCLARA UbuntuNet Alliance (E&S Africa) WACREN (W&C Africa) ASREN (Arab States) TEIN*CC (Asia-Pacific) CAREN NOC – NITC (Central Asia) NIIFI KIFÜ (Hungary) CSIR (South Africa) MoU Partners InnovaRed (Argentina) APAN (Asia Pacific AARNet (Austraria) EthERNet (Ethiopia)

5 World Wide Contact Points
To establish a set of agreements for participating world regions to consolidate/complete middleware for a marketplace of services and real-time applications to benefit global science communities. 5

6 Objectives To enable mobility and seamless access to services by:
promoting the establishment of identity federations connected to eduGAIN, creating awareness of privacy and security issues, and increasing uptake of eduroam. To enable the provision of collaboration tools and services among NRENs based on NREN-run applications made available via a worldwide application market. To seek consensus on interoperability of real-time applications and work towards the adoption of standards such as those proposed by the Global CEO Forum To foster the collaborative work of Global Science Communities by actively promoting the participation researchers in European Commission Calls, etc.

7 Project Structure

8 MAGIC Project activities
WP2 – Platforms for Mobility Enabling mobility and seamless access to services IdFs, eduroam, security WP3 – Cloud provisioning and groupware standards Provision of collaborative tools and services among NRENs WP4 – Real Time Collaboration Interoperability of real time applications and adoption of standards WP5 – Global Science Communities Fostering collaborative work of Global Science Communities (GSCs) WP6 - Dissemination

9 Global Science Communities
A group of experts (researchers and/or academics) from different parts of the world with a common interest, working together on activities, sharing best practice, knowledge and experiences. We have 4 Communities E-Health Biodiversity Environment Remote Instrumentation (Shared Laboratories) Each GSC has a Champion

10 Four Global Science Communities (GSC)
E-Health First meeting: Feb 2nd Members: 58+ Thematic Leader: Luiz Ary Messina, National Coordinator of Rute (Rede Universitária de Telemedicina), Brazil. Biodiversity First meeting: Feb 11th Members: 31+ Thematic Leader: José Ramón Martínez Professor and researcher of the Universidad Autònoma de santo Domingo (UASD), Dominic Republic. Environment First meeting: Feb 18th Members: 28+ Thematic Leader: David C. Smith, Coordinator Intitute for Sustainable Development, The UWI, University of the West Indies, Jamaica. Remote Intrumentation First meeting: Feb 25th Members: 16+ Thematic Leader: Patricia Santiago, Associate Professor Physics Institute, Universidad Autònoma de Mèxico (UNAM), Mexico.

11 Global Science Communities members
From 19 countries (Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Ghana, Jamaica, Jordan, Lebanon, Malawi, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda) Representing The Americas, Africa, Europe, The Caribbean and Middle East.

12 Regional thematic Events
How GSCs Work Virtual, Colaboratorio Communities (Spaces on Colaboratorio) , Web conference Virtual Events Discuss issues of common interest Share information on opportunities Regional thematic Events Co-located with major events

13 Lessons from MAGIC Research problems better addressed by multi-disciplinary teams from different parts of the world GSCs are vital in removing isolation of researchers / scientists Sustainability requires some anchor (that keeps them together) activities or funding or

14 Lynn Silipigni Connaway's vision of the library of the future published in Library 2020 book
Meeting the Expectations of the Community: The Engagement-Centered Library Key highlights Something that often is difficult for library and information professionals to comprehend is that the majority of the population does not use libraries to get information. The library in 2020 will provide user-centered services and systems that will meet the expectations of the community. The library must build its service around users’ workflows because their attention is scarce and resources are abundant. Librarians in 2020 will be assisting users in the creation, evaluation, and production of content. Librarians will need to develop partnerships with individuals who create, collect, and analyze data sets.

15 Highlights continued Librarians will need to provide policies, systems, and services for the storage, access, preservation, and shared use of data. Librarians need to possess a willingness and eagerness to try new technologies, modes of communication and delivery of services. Librarians will need to be where users need them, when they need them. The library will need to provide user-centered services and systems that will meet the expectations of the community. Now is the time t begin positioning yourself for the future. AfricaConnect2 is providing connectivity, next users will expect more from you

16 Questions to Ponder You are asked by the Head of the University Medical Department to source a journal article on a rare disease which the Government requires in 24 hours. A graduate student requests urgent thesis review/consultation prior to submitting to Graduate Studies You are asked to do a joint presentation on the most current resources available for paediatric cardiology How can digital collaboration with global access to resources in a number of fields help your work?
