2 BACKGROUND u Plan of Action of OOSA, following UNISPACE III u Training module on capacity-building in the use of global positioning and navigation systems in various areas of applications u 2001-2002: Series of UN/USA Regional Workshops and International Meeting of Experts on the Use and Applications of GNSS u August 2001, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for Asia and the Pacific; u November 2001, Vienna, Austria, for Central and Eastern Europe; u April 2002, Santiago de Chile, for Latin America and the Caribbean; u July 2002, Lusaka, Zambia, for Africa and Western Asia; u November 2002, Vienna, Austria, International Meeting u December 2003, Vienna, Austria, International Workshop u Contributions to the work of the Action Team on GNSS u Requests for support to follow-up initiatives/activities

3 SURVEY ON GNSS FOLLOW-UP INITIATIVES 2003 u Global survey conducted among 300 experts from developing countries who participated in the UN/USA Regional Workshops and International Meeting on GNSS in 2001-2002 u 2001-2002: Questions asked: u Initiatives/follow-up actions undertaken u Difficulties encountered u Recommendations to overcome those difficulties in undertaking initiatives and follow-up actions u Thematic areas addressed in the survey: u Surveying, mapping and Earth sciences u Agriculture and management of natural resources u Management of environment and natural disasters u Transportation u Education, training and awareness increase

6 OOSA SUPPORT TO GNSS ACTIVITIES u Organization of an international meetings u Support to the work of Action Team on GNSS, possible implementation of some of the recommendations u Promotion of integration of lectures and field work on GNSS in education curriculum and activities of the regional centres u Model education curriculum on RS and GIS (ST/SPACE/18) already includes lectures and field work on GNSS such as: u Lectures: u Fundamental concepts of GPS u Types of GNSS satellites u Applications of GNSS in resource surveys, mapping and navigation u Field work u Checking of existing map coordinates u Survey of small areas with the help of GPS receivers u Support to a few selected follow-up initiatives and projects

7 Current Status Part one: u Up dated status of projects and initiatives u Plan of activities for 2005 u Road map of actions to carry forward recommendations of the Action Team on GNSS Part Two: u Agreement on the establishment of an International Committee on GNSS u Two meetings held to define/review Terms of Reference on 16/17 Dec 2004 and 3 March 2005
