Overall, the median cost of absence per employee was £554 in 2015 A review of academic studies shows that the return on investment for some workplace health initiatives can range from £2 for every £1 spent (1:2) to £34 for every £1 spent (1:34) .

Together mental ill health and musculoskeletal disorders made up 85% of new cases of work related ill health reported by participating GPs in the THOR-GP surveillance scheme (Great Britain) during In 2014/15 stress accounted for 35% of all work-related ill health cases and 43% of all working days lost due to ill health. The total number of cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2014/15 was 440,000 cases: a prevalence rate of 1,380 per 100,000 workers Work-related musculoskeletal disorders accounted for 41% of workplace ill-health cases in 2015/16, or 539,000 out of a total of 1,311,000. An estimated 8.8 million working days were lost as a result; an average of 16 days lost for each case.
