1 On a new page, miss the top two lines and…
List as many different languages as you can

2 2.3 How was the bible translated
To know how the bible was translated What languages was the bible originally written in? To understand the advantages and disadvantages of translation

3 How was it translated? Read pages 74 and 75
What language was the old testament written in ? What language was the new testament written in? What language did Jesus and the disciples speak? What other language was the bible first translated into? Why do you think this language was chosen? Who was the first person to translate the bible into English? What language did he translate it from? Why was this first translation likely to be less accurate than the later versions that were translated directly from the original languages?

4 John Wycliffe An extract from the first english bible, the Vulgate.
CAP 1 1 In the bigynnyng God made of nouyt heuene and erthe. 2 Forsothe the erthe was idel and voide, and derknessis weren on the face of depthe; and the Spiryt of the Lord was borun on the watris. 3 And God seide, Liyt be maad, and liyt was maad. Why is this passage difficult for us to read? Translate it to modern English and write it in your book.

5 The King James Version “ 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was[a] on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.”

6 The New International Version
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.  3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

7 The contemporary English version
1In the beginning God    created the heavens    and the earth. [a] 2The earth was barren,    with no form of life; [b] it was under a roaring ocean    covered with darkness.    But the Spirit of God [c] was moving over the water. The First Day  3 God said, "I command light to shine!" And light started shining. 4God looked at the light and saw that it was good.

8 The Message Translation
1-2First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.  3-5 God spoke: "Light!"       And light appeared.    God saw that light was good       and separated light from dark.    God named the light Day,       he named the dark Night.    It was evening, it was morning—    Day One.

9 The Street Bible First off, nothing. No light, no time, no substance, no matter. Second off, God starts it all up and WHAP! Stuff everywhere! The cosmos in chaos: no shape, no form, no function– just darkness ... total. And floating above it all, God’s Holy Spirit, ready to play. Day one: Then God’s voice booms out, ‘Lights!’ and, from nowhere, light floods the skies and ‘night’ is swept off the scene.

10 Controversy Everybody was happy to translate the bible into Latin because it was the official language of the roman empire but not everyone agreed that it should be translated into other languages.

11 Translating Why do you think that the bible was translated into Latin?
“the bible should never have been translated from Latin into any other language” Do you agree? (3) Why would some disagree with you? (3) The street bible is “one of the most disrespectful things I've set my eyes on.” Do you agree? Explain your answer? Give two reasons to explain you answer.

12 Use the Hebrew alphabet above to write your name in Hebrew.
Write a message in Hebrew for your partner to translate
