2 EndNote Basic: It allows you to: Collect references from online sources or enter them manually Access your references from any computer with internet Drop citations into your paper as you type in MS Word Choose the referencing system that is required for your assignment Share collections of references with specified colleagues

3 First go to:

4 Click on the ‘Sign up’ link
Your initial sign up must be on a computer within the DIT domain. After that you may use it from anywhere.

5 Enter your details and choose a password and you’ll be sent a confirmation email.

6 Some basic instruction is available in the ‘Getting Started Guide’.

7 To get the full benefit from EndNote
you will need to download a patch to any computer you will be using it on. To do this: …

8 Click on ‘Downloads’.

9 Follow the instructions here to capture items from the web.
Use this patch if you’re using an Apple computer. This patch will place the EndNote tab in MS Word, regardless of the browser you are using

11 You can simply drag the “Capture Reference” tool to your bookmarks bar
You can simply drag the “Capture Reference” tool to your bookmarks bar. This will allow you to capture references you find online into your Endnote library.

12 Main ways of getting references into EndNote Web:
Search DIT Library Catalogue Export from a database which links with EndNote Web Enter reference manually Use the “Capture Reference” tool to capture something you discover online

13 To search DIT Library’s catalogue first click on the ‘Collect’ tab and select ‘Online Search’.

14 When you enter this area for the first time you’ll need to customise the list by
clicking “Select Favourites”.

15 From the list on the left,
find and select “DIT Library” and click “Copy to Favourites”.

16 Now, you can choose “DIT Library” from the drop down list
Now, you can choose “DIT Library” from the drop down list. Then click “Connect”

17 Carry out your search as normal…

18 First, check the reference(s) you want to save
Then, select which of your reference groups to add the references to

19 These references are now saved to EndNote.

21 Carry out your search as normal

22 Check the references you wish to save then click on “Export”

23 In the drop down list you shouldn’t need to change anything.
Just click “Export”.

24 A file will be downloaded to your computer
(This example was done using the Google Chrome browser)

25 In EndNote click on ‘collect’ then ‘Import References’.

26 You should find the file in your computer’s ‘downloads’ folder.
For ‘Import Option’ select ‘RefMan RIS’. Then choose which folder to save it to.

27 The references are now in your EndNote collection.

29 Carry out your search as normal

30 As before, check the article you’re interested in.
Then click the “Save to EndNote online” button.

31 To export records you’ll need to be registered on Web of Science.
You’ll notice the “EN” logo beside the records that you’ve exported.

33 Carry out your search as normal.

34 Choose the article you wish to export by clicking on the title or on “PDF Full Text”.

35 Select the “Export” option from the “Tools” menu.

36 Select the option to “Direct Export to EndNote Web” and click “Save”.
Your citation should then export directly to your EndNote account.

38 Carry out your search as normal.

39 In your results screen check the article(s) you wish to export.

40 Select “Download citation” from the drop down menu.

41 Select “RIS (ProCite, Reference Manager)” and then click “Download article citation data”.

42 The RIS file is downloaded
The RIS file is downloaded. You can import this to your EndNote library as explained in slides

43 Sometimes you will need to enter records manually into EndNote.

44 If this is the case click on ‘Collect’ then ‘New Reference’…

45 From the drop down list Select the appropriate reference type

46 Don’t worry about filling every field but make sure to enter all the information you have.

48 To enter a reference, first select the EndNote tab.

49 Enter your EndNote login.

50 To avoid having to login repeatedly, click on ‘Preferences’ and under the ‘Application’ tab enter your login details and check the box beside ‘Remember my address and password’.

51 Select “Insert Citations”

52 Enter a search term for the reference you seek and hit
“Find”.

53 When you find the correct reference click “insert”

54 This will: 1: Enter a citation in brackets at the point where the cursor is located. 2: Begin constructing a bibliography at the end of the document.

55 If you’d like to have a title for the bibliography click on the bibliography preferences

56 Click on the “Layout” tab
Type your preferred title in The “Bibliography title” box

57 Choose the appropriate referencing style from the “Style” drop down list.
Once you have decided which style you need to use you shouldn’t really need to change this again.

58 How to save information you come across online.

59 First click on “Downloads”…
… then simply grab the “Capture reference” tab and drag it to your bookmarks bar…

60 When you find something interesting online, click the “Capture Reference” button.

61 If you get an error message like the one above you’ll need to go into ‘tools’ and turn off your ‘pop-up blocker’.

62 This will open an EndNote template
This will open an EndNote template. It will probably contain some of the article’s details but you will need to complete it. It will then be sent to your EndNote library.
