There is a strong connection between reading a variety of text with reading achievement and vocabulary. 80% of a student’s vocabulary comes from reading and is a direct result from how much is read.*
The more words read per year, the higher their vocabulary, the higher their background knowledge, the higher their exposure to the world, and the higher their ability to comprehend all sorts of information.

7. -DUSD is shifting to the Common Core State Standards so that students,
beginning in Grade 3 in the spring of 2015, will be ready to take the
Smarter Balanced Assessments.
-We will be adding a link on the DUSD homepage which will
provide additional information about the Common Core State Standards.
-Parents who are interested in knowing more about Smarter Balanced
Assessments should visit:
