January 25, 2017 Bell ringer: Draw and label a health triangle on a sheet of paper. For each side, identify two decisions you have made during the past few days that could affect your health. Place a “+” by those decisions that were healthful and a “-” by those that could have been or were harmful. OBJECTIVE: Chapter 1, lesson 3:

2 Words to know…. Risk Behaviors – Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. Cumulative risks- related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Abstinence- avoiding harmful behaviors, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs and sexual activity before marriage.

3 Understanding health risks
The 1st step is recognizing right and wrong when it comes to risk behaviors… the 2nd step is to examine your current behavior and make any necessary changes. * Wearing protective gear is one way to reduce health risks… what other ways are as well?

4 Recognizing risk Behaviors
Based off the CDC (center for disease control and prevention). How does this make you feel? Based off the information, of the 4, which is a risky behavior: Wearing a helmet Exercising regularly Avoiding alcohol Smoking

5 Risk Behavior: Teen Driving
Statistics show… 33% of deaths among 13 to 19-year-olds in occurred in motor vehicle crashes. 16-year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age. 56% of teens said they talk on the phone while driving. Statistics show that 16 and 17-year-old driver death rates increase with each additional passenger.

6 Cumulative Risks and Consequences
Cumulative risks are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Smoking one cigarette, for example, is not likely to result in death. Neither is eating one high-fat meal.. BUT if these behaviors are repeated over time, the negative effect can lead to serious health consequences. What could be the consequences of smoking, eating high fat foods, or even driving fast?

10 Alcohol/drugs

11 ABSTINENCE! The only way to avoid consequences of some of the MOST serious risk behaviors is to practice Abstinence. WHY should you abstain from using tobacco alcohol and other drugs? Can cause addiction and can seriously harm your body Can cause death – overdose? Isolates a person from friends and family It is illegal in some cases (drugs), being 18 to smoke, 21 to drink Physical and psychological effects

13 Abstinence from Sexual Activity
Why would you choose to be Abstinent from sexual activity until marriage? Never have to worry about unplanned pregnancy. Abstinence is the ONLY method that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. Will not be faced with difficult decisions associated with unplanned pregnancy, such as being a single parent No responsibilities of taking on care of a child No worry about Sexually transmitted diseases (HIV infection)
