1 Agenda for 3/21/17 Go over Waves Review worksheet
Electromagnetic Spectrum Jigsaw Activity No HW

2 Electromagnetic Spectrum Jigsaw
Your group is going to become an expert in an area of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some of the things to include in your poster: What are the characteristics of this type of radiation (wavelength, frequency, key facts)? Where is this type of radiation located on the electromagnetic spectrum in relation to other kinds of radiation? How is it used or found in our everyday lives or in certain industries? Identify and explain at least two uses. Use textbook and NASA packet to find info

3 Agenda for 3/22/17 Poster Presentations EMS notes No HW

4 Electromagnetic Energy
Electromagnetic Waves (radiation): Are transverse waves produced by the motion of electrically charged particles. Electromagnetic Spectrum: Total Range of all electromagnetic waves.

5 Electromagnetic Spectrum

6 Electromagnetic Spectrum
Gamma Rays – strongest waves X-Rays – used to view bones and teeth. Ultraviolet (UV) – tanning and sunburn. Visible Light – allows us to see color

7 Infrared – radar systems, remote controls
Microwave – used for aircraft navigation. Radio waves FM – high frequency radio and TV. AM – low frequency radio. Long Radio waves – used by astronauts to communicate to Earth from the moon

8 Electromagnetic Energy
Usually the shorter the wavelength the more dangerous the electromagnetic wave (higher frequency). Which portion of the spectrum is most dangerous? Gamma Rays.

9 Visible Spectrum Definition:
The ONLY portion of the spectrum that can be seen by the naked eye. ROY G BIV gives us the order from the longest wavelength - (RED) to the shortest wavelength - (VIOLET). White light (sunlight) is a mixture of ALL visible light.

10 5 Question Mini Quiz 1) What part of the EMS has the most dangerous radiation? 2) What part of the EMS has the longest waves? 3) What is the only part of the spectrum we can see? 4) What part of the spectrum is used to view bones and teeth? 5) What part of the spectrum is used in remote controls?

11 1) What part of the EMS has the most dangerous radiation? GAMMA
2) What part of the EMS has the longest waves? RADIO 3) What is the only part of the spectrum we can see? VISIBLE LIGHT 4) What part of the spectrum is used to view bones and teeth? X-RAY 5) What part of the spectrum is used in remote controls? INFRARED
