2 Lev Vygotsky was born in Orsha, a city in the western region of the Russian Empire. However, his formal work in psychology did not begin until 1924 when he attended the Institute of Psychology in Moscow and began collaborating with Alexei Leontiev and Alexander Luria. Background

3 His two most influential theories were the Zone of Proximal Development Theory and the Sociocultural Theory. Zone of Proximal Development: "the distance between the actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance, or in collaboration with more capable peers.“ Sociocultural Theory: It states that human development results from the interaction between an individual and society. Because of this, children learn from parents and teachers. Their learning experience depends on cultural differences. Society affects people and people affect society. Theories

4 Vygotsky’s theories can be applied in our lives to help our future children if we recognize what he is saying. He states the importance of the community in affecting the child that is being raised. Also he claims that learning is a part of development. As a parent, we could be successful in raising our children if we raise them in a friendly, high moral community. It also means that our example to our children and our home life for them will affect their development greatly. We should encourage learning to the highest ability because knowledge is key in development. Application
