SEVERE MENTAL IMPAIRMENT • Listen to music of his/her choice. • Allow resident to hold soft stuffed toys. • Hang bright mobile overhead. • Place bed near window or reposition resident so she/he can see out. • Point out objects inside or outside. • Decorate rooms with objects that are significant to residents.

Nurse Assistant’s Responsibilities
**C.N.A Nurse Assistant’s Responsibilities • Suggest activities of interest • Check activity calendar daily. Encourage resident to select activities of personal interest • Make sure resident is toileted, clean, and properly dressed before taking him/her to the activity. • Take to the proper place at the right time. • Assist the resident returns to care area after an activity.

• Support and encourage the activity program. • Encourage residents to think about activities they would like to do and suggest those activities to the activities director.

Nurse Assistant’s Participation
• When daily care routines are complete or you have some extra time, offer to do some activities. Play checkers Play cards. Read Encourage residents to listen to or discuss the news with them. **C.N.A Write a letter for resident. • After supper, encourage some kind of activity according to the resident’s wishes and the care plan. Encourage visiting Watch favorite TV programs. Encourage individual crafts, puzzles, or reading. Encourage visiting with family.

Nurse Assistant’s Participation
• During the night, if the resident has trouble sleeping, sit and talk with him/her a few minutes; offer a back rub. Offer a snack (ex. Warm milk due tryptophan) , as appropriate by diet.

Conclusion Days without meaning are useless. Long-term care residents need something to look forward to each day. You can bring this spark of anticipation to their lives.
