12 “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Original Word: כָּבַד Transliteration: kabad or kabed Phonetic Spelling: (kaw-bad') Definition to be heavy, weighty, or burdensome kabad or kabed: to be heavy, weighty, or burdensome
Treat with gravity, with weight with substance

5. To dishonour was considered in Hebrew as a “Curse”

6. For some this word is like a warm cup of milo on a cold day
For others this word strikes fear and rouses memories that are unpleasant in the least.

7. Kids =
0-17 years old
What does it look like for kids to HONOUR PARENTS

8. Kids = Obey Really simple do what your told First time your told
Turn off your device
Stack the dishwasher
Clean your room
Do what your told
Disobey is to dishonour
Lying to parents
Shirking your responsibilities
CAVIOT – if your in a situation where your being mistreated or abused in some way
then to honour is to protect yourself

9. Colossians 3:20-21
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
My parents are Jerks & they don’t give me freedom, they’re old, controlling etc
They feed you, house you & take care of you
Parents have to raise you, take care of you, feed you, take you to hospital etc
Honouring your parents pleases Jesus!
This is an act of submission and love to Jesus, spiritual maturity
You can disagree yet still honour your parents
Again if you’re being physically, psychologically or sexually abused by your parents then honouring them
Isn't submitting yourself to more abuse

What's it look like for adult Children to Honour their parents?

11. Adult Children = Assistance
Part of this command was to ensure that adult children didn’t abandon their elderly parents when they needed caring for
“So you may live long in the land your Lord God will Give you”
The idea here isn’t do this & then God will…
The idea is God is forging a new kind of community
Where the weak are cared for by the strong, where the wealthy share with the poor
Where kids who were cared for by parents CARE FOR PARENTS WHEN THEY GET OLDER!

12. What do you do when you have Bad experiences with our Parents?
What about when they his mistreated you repeatedly
AGAIN IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED ABUSE DON’T GO BACK FOOLHEARDLY

13. Mark 7:9-13
9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!10 For Moses said, ‘Honour your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
THIS IS GOD (JESUS) SPEAKING
Corban- dedicated money/asset to Gods put aside for God’s work.
Pharisees were using a legal loophole they would call “Corban” on their assets
Then they didn’t have top car for ageing parents
TALMUDIC TEACHER “while Jesus considered the vow to be illegal & void, the Rabbis held it to be merely voidable”
So if your giving all your money to the Church and not looking after your own people Jesus is speaking to you.

14. 1 Tim 5:3-4
3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.
 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God

Honouring Parents Makes God Happy 
