1 Beyond KC Missions Fund Scholarship/Sponsorship Program

2 The BKC Missions Fund Established in partnership with The Resurrection Foundation to provide a source of patient capital for BKC Missions Donors’ dream was to build a school in Madisi, Malawi Based on donors’ passion for missions, education and children Donors’ assumption was that there were no schools in Madisi Initial seeding was made in late 2010

3 Initial Impression Two members of donors’ family participated in first Resurrection mission trip to Malawi, June 2011 “It felt like we were facing a 1,000-foot wall, and we wondered, where do we start? As our time there progressed, we realized that it’s not important where we start, but that we start.”

4 Education in Malawi UMC Nursery Schools Public/Private Primary Schools
Government Secondary Schools University (within or outside Malawi) Malawi UMC has scholarship program for students to Africa University, a UMC college in nearby Zimbabwe Resurrection has also developed a lay scholarship program to Africa University, initially funding two scholarships

5 Public vs. Private Schools
Public school conditions poor Student/teacher ratios up to 100:1 or more Very limited resources (5 textbooks/class) Existing network of private schools To be vetted against doctrine, treatment of students Cost much lower than US private schools

6 Sponsorship Similar to World Vision, Compassion, etc.
Group/individual will: Provide ongoing funding for sponsored pastor’s child at a cost of $50 per month Be able to send/receive correspondence/pictures to sponsored family through COR mission teams (subject to logistical considerations) If participating in a mission trip to Malawi, would have opportunity for cultural visit to sponsored family (subject to logistical considerations) 34 children currently enrolled

7 Why Pastors’ Families? UMC pastors in Malawi are non-salaried
Major sacrifices to be a local pastor Assigned to local villages with extremely poor conditions A starting point

8 Benefits of Sponsorship
Provide opportunity for Malawi’s impoverished children Sustain BKC Missions Fund into perpetuity Provide opportunities for connection between Resurrection members/groups and people of Malawi beyond mission trip participation Provide enhanced cultural opportunity for mission trip participants, incentive for participation in mission trips to Malawi Strengthen bond between Resurrection and Malawi UMC

9 Cost of Sponsorship $50/month per student Provides:
Tuition Books Uniform Shoes Costs based on current annual estimates, and reflect inflation-based annual increases over ten years at the current Malawian inflation rate, averaged over ten years

10 Commitment Dependent on child’s year in school
Sponsors desiring a short-term commitment can sponsor a child in secondary school Sponsors desiring a long-term commitment can sponsor a child in primary school, and/or sponsor a new child when their sponsored child graduates
