1 Metal Shop Safety By: Jaryn and Rhiannon

2 General Shop Safety Always wear safety goggles.
Don’t wear baggy clothing, tie back long hair, and don’t wear any jewelry. Use the right tool for the right job. Never carry sharp things in your pocket or your mouth. Secure object you are working on. Be careful when carrying heavy objects around the shop.

3 Drill Press The metal must be in the drill vice or be clamped to the drill table. The drill speed must be appropriate for the drill bit. Make sure there is no chuck key in the chuck when you go to drill. Don’t move the stock when the bit is still in the hole it could break the bit. Try to avoid drilling into the vice or table.

4 Hand Drill Secure smaller pieces in a vice.
Keep the cord away from the drilling area. Secure the stock in a vice or clamp if there's any chance it could catch on the bit and spin around. The bit should be sharpened and tight in the chuck. Make a dimple with a punch to keep the bit in place. Make sure you have a strong grip on drills, Eye and ear protection are required.

5 Air Riveter Never use a rivet gun around anything flammable or explosive. Avoid using one around heaters or fireplaces. Disconnect the riveter from air supply before changing accessories, servicing, or performing any maintenance. Replace or repair broken parts. Keep a safe distance away from your body.

6 Spot Welder Never put body parts near pinch point area.
Always use both hands. Wear dry, hole free, insulating gloves and body protection. When your finished the work area should be safe, clean and tidy.

7 Scroll Saw Never reach under the table when the machine is running.
Maintain the proper blade tension. Make sure the blade is the proper type for the cut you are planning to do. Insert the blade with the teeth pointing forward and down on the table. Never start the machine until all handles are locked. Never start the machine before cleaning the table and the work space.

8 Foot Shear Your foot must be completely removed from the pedal box after completing each cut. Don’t put any body parts under the blades. Use proper lockout procedure when setting up machinery. Always put your tools back after you set up.

9 Bench Shear Use supports for long material.
Never use shears for cutting metal that’s beyond the machines capacity. Hold metal tightly to prevent it tilting during the cut. Faulty equipment must not be used report all suspect machinery.

10 Benders (Finger Brake, Bar Bender and DiAcro Bender)
Finger Brake: Keep clear of moving counterweight. Bar bender: Do not add oil or clean the machine while the machine is working. Don’t adjust speed higher than the machine allows. DiAcro bender: before bender is setup for operation, mount on workbench or stand with stand or workbench bolted in place.

11 Sanders (Drum, Belt and Disc)
Drum Sanders: Only process multiple pieces with similar thickness. When sanding multiple pieces simultaneously, stagger them across the width of the belt. Belt sander: Ensure that sanding belts are not too tight or too loose. Never operate a sanding disk if the paper is loose. Disc sander: Sand only on the down stroke side. Do not push materials against sanders with excessive force.

12 Saws (Metal Cutoff, Horizontal Bandsaw and Vertical Bandsaw)
Metal cut-off saw: Do not force the cut. Adjust guards with the saw off. Mount cutting discs with the correct tools. Always leave guards on saws. Horizontal bandsaw: do not push down on the cutting head while it is cutting. Don’t leave the machine running unattended. Make sure to switch off the saw and reset al guards to a fully closed position. Vertical bandsaw: maintain properly sharpened blades. Use a push stick or manual feed arm to control the stock when it is near the blade. Use a special jig when cutting small pieces of stalk.

13 Bench Grinder / Buffing Wheel / Wire Wheel
Bench Grinder: do not use a cracked wheel. Make sure the wheel housing guards are in place. Do not heavy grind on the side of the wheel. Do not operate a grinder unless it is fully secure on a workbench. Buffing wheel: never allow the top edge of the work to be caught by the mop. Always apply the work to the bottom part of the mop. The buffing wheel must only be operated by one person. Wire wheel: do not stand directly in front of the machine. Sleeves should be rolled up.

14 Metal Lathe Remove all tools from the bed and the slides of the machine. Do not try to lift the chucks or face plates that are too big for you, Make sure you select the correct speed for machine process. Ensure all guards are in place.

15 Milling Machine Do not make contact with the revolving cutter.
Do not attempt to tighten arbor nuts using machine power. Never adjust the work piece or work mounting devices when the machine is operating. When installing or removing milling cutters, always hold them with a rag to prevent cutting your hands. .

16 Welders (Stick and MIG)
Stick welder: do not operate with covers removed. Disconnect input power before servicing. Do not touch electrically live parts. MIG welder: Adequate lighting. Check for gas leaks. Protect against burns caused by metal heating, electrodes and from ultraviolet light.

17 Oxy-Acetylene Torch Keep acetylene and oxygen separate until the torch is ignited. Opening both gas valves prior to ignition can cause gas backflow into either gas hose, leaving the system vulnerable to flashback. If using dual torches to heat both sides of a part, do not aim the torches at each other, but rather, angle each torch toward the part.
